Launch Monitor

Does anybody know how much a system costs, which systems are good and how the different systems work?
Most importantly- where is the place to buy them at lowest price?

Thanks, Axel

The Zelocity PureLaunch is working well for us. Very easy to setup and use and gives accurate readings on club speed, ball speed and launch angle. Go direct to Zelocity.com There customer service is very helpful. Ask about their new software, due out soon. You can view the manual on line.

Expensive

I like the Zelocity but one of the most important aspects of a launch monitor is spin number accuracy. From what i know, only the Vector and the Trackman and i think the Flightscope accurately tell you the spin data and don't "estimate" it.

we use a vector launch monitor at work. gives clubhead speed, ball speed, spin rates, launch angle and estimated yardage. also shows variations of clubhead path for angle of attack and delivery. i think they go for 4-5 grand with all software, etc

how accurate do you think the estimated yardage is on the vector?

Pretty damn good imo. I remember when i was swinging a bit slower my "best drives" were in the 275-290 range (currently my best drives are in the 290-305 range).

When i was getting fitted (back then) the Vectory accurately recorded one of my "best drives." Something like:

108mph swing speed
don't remember ball speed
i think a 13.5-14.3* launch angle
something like 2750 or 2800rpm of spin
carry was 275
roll was calculated at 14 yards
total yardage was 289 which was a "best drive" back then.

However the vector was setup NUETRAL. They can be "tricked up" a bit. As long as the person setting it up knows what they are doing and are placing it correctly they are really great.

Thanks for all the answers. The reason I was asking is that I'm currently building a golf robot. (Still a long way to go though).
Therefore I'm looking for a low priced launch monitor that is actually measuring the ball itself. That way I want to test clubs and do experimental research on how the ball reacts to certain impact conditions. If the monitor calculated the data from clubhead parameters it would screw up the idea of the whole idea of the experiment since I would just get theoretical values instead of hard data.
Which systems do use pictures?

Don't most launch monitors (or at least some) have a problem determing clubhead/speadhead speed? I forget which one(s), but I've read some will measure one (like ball speed) and calculate the other (say, clubhead speed).

Edit: Oh, found one such quote about estimates/calcuatations:
I've tested the Golf Achiever 2 unit several times. I had a unit in my home, I tried one owned by a golf shop, and one I tested outdoors which was operated by a regional tour trailer. While the GA2 was great for launch angle and ball speed, in my opinion the estimates for spin rate and carry distance were not very accurate, and I think these are indeed very important parameters for clubfitting

Units may need IR and laser to get info on ball and head.

Go get 'em Axel...

I will be looking HARD at this year's PGA Show for one myself.

Still haven't found one that does "sidespin" very well.

There is only one launch monitor that gives real numbers as it refers to what the ball is doing and that is Trackman. The Vector is based on a highly complicated equation. Zelocity is a great product that actual tracks the ball for a short distance but in the end is a very accurate guess. Flightscope has the technology to follow the ball but do not use it fully.

The USGA uses trackman for its testing. The base model goes for about 55K.
