LCT Push or Pull?

In a lagging clubhead takeaway, does the body pull or push the club away from the ball (through the hands)?

Reason I ask, is that they seem to produce totally different feels. The pull sensation seems to cause a lot of whip, but poor control on the transition and a more in-out path. The push sensation seems to smooth things out and cause a more straight line delivery. Which is correct? Either?

I ask because I read in Sam Snead's book on the golf swing that he thought of pushing the club away from the ball, not pulling or lifting. Trying it out, it's an entirely different feel, one that I wonder if it could help me from coming too much in-out on the downswing.
