Lead Tape

I'm new to this stuff. Having trouble feeling the weight of my driver head and want to experiment with lead tape a bit...might even throw some on my putter. Got it up to a D4 now. Is there anything to using this stuff I have to adhere to or is it just slap it on until it feels like the right weight? I've heard it does and doesn't do things to ball flight is the reason why I'm asking. Does putting it on the heel promote closing the face?

just look at taylormade r7 super quad's configuration. They are helpful.

but lead tape is bad for the environment tho..

My impression, based on what I've read, is that you're very unlikely to apply lead weight in sufficient quantity to shift the clubhead's COG so as to alter ballflight.

But worth playing around with to alter swingweight - or even to look at matching your irons for MoI. I think Richie has blogged about this.

Used to be a sign of a real golfer. Aesthetics be damned. Sort of the anti-thesis of folks who use head covers for irons to preserve their looks.. I've had tape on many sets of irons, including my current set. My former club maker showed me the swingweight variation on a set of factory assembled Titleist irons. He said Titleist head weights were one of the best and that most of the other brands were much worse.

Center of Gravity movement with tape? Probably, but it's my center of gravity that far overshadows this small variable!

I have three strips approx 3inches long side by side on the bottom of my driver, down the middle (not towards the heel or toe) and I find it has kept me from getting too quick and more than anything else I can control the face better because I can SENSE it throughout the whole swing.

This is almost exactly what I've been told by a few fitters. Some will tell you can effect ball flight, CoG, etc., but its most useful function is definitely altering swing weight.

I also remember seeing something on the internet stating that Tiger had wrapped lead tape around the shaft just above the hosel of his driver. No doubt, a temporary experiment as he can snap his fingers and get whatever club specs he wants.

You'll never put enough on to change the CoG of your club. Don't eat any of it and you should be fine. :)

If I pick up a driver and decide that I really can't feel it, I definitely add tape to back, at the bottom and centered. It's easy to remove and does no damage. Having said that, of my 6-7 drivers, only 1-2 have any tape on them.

Regarding, tape on the heel to close the face, I've heard that is where to put it. However, If you have the time to spend on the range, I would recommend learning better swing mechanics.

Not interested at all in changing ball flight, that's why I asked...well, if it will maybe make the ball fly further then that's fine. I just wanted to be able to feel the clubhead a little better.
