Left hand grip

Hi guys,

Just wanted to confirm where the butt of the club sits in the heel of the hand. Does the Pisiform(carpal bone) sit directly on top of the handle or is it the fleshy part of the heel of the hand(a little more towards the fingers) that sits on top.

Reason for the question is that my palm is getting very sore, from rubbing of the handle on the little finger side, mid way up the palm. I am sure my grip can't be quite right with this result.

Christopher

What you didn't tell us is whether your current grip is bone on top, or fleshy pad on top.
Logical guess would be that you have bone on top of grip. Maybe you don't have the grip enough
in your fingers. Another potential error would be gripping too far out toward the end of the grip.

Christopher,

Check this video on the grip. Skip to 4:00 to 5:20

The "C" grip is not good for the full swing. My hand would hurt too. I think it would only useful for around the green. The more my pisiform bone is closer to the "bow" or front top of the butt part of the grip, the more it would hurt to take a full swing.

The "N" or "D" grip would have the fleshy part sit more on front or top on the grip.
I think the more you have the base of the left fingers gripping the club, the faster you can swing the club. This would be the "D" grip.
That is my preference.

I wish there was a golf book that analyzed all the different hand and wrist anatomies in relation to the golf grip and swing.

It seems as if hand and wrist anatomy is ignored most likely because it adds too many variables to the golfswing.

I'm sure that the many different hand and wrist shapes have a significant effect on the golfswing, and in particular the Release of the club approaching Impact.

LAWs of the Golf Swing did attempt to relate body types to swing styles, and that really complicated things. Golfers and teachers prefer a simplified if not simplistic approach to the golfswing.

Things like S&T and even the D-plane complicates golfswing understanding and discussion.

How many variables can you contemplate before the golfswing gets too complex for you?

That sounds downright dirty ... are you sure you're on the right forum ..

I used to grip the club too high up in my left hand. I made a grip change about 10 months ago. Can't say this is the exact correct position, but it is much closer to the correct position than it was previously.

The grip change and incorporating a flat left wrist changed the way I play golf. Forward leaning shaft and lag also were big. I have not hooked a ball this year. I am no longer a "flipper" relying on perfect timing to play well. That is what killed my scores in the past. I had made the game far more complicated than it needed to be.

Jumbo grips with several wraps of tape under them.

That is how us fat boys get down:D

Actually in a box beside me I have 20 Gripmaster leather grips I bought on Ebay. Thought about trying a regular sized grip. I can put 2 wraps of tape under these, but no more. Not sure what to expect as I have not used a regular sized grip in 15 years.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Dan those pics are very helpful. The first pic is almost exactly where I have my grip. Looks like I have some work to do. How long did it take to feel comfortable with the new grip position and how often were you practicing it before you got that comfort?

Got some good news, but it is a little embarrassing to admit, I have worked out why my hand was hurting. I have recently changed gloves on the recommendation of the local golf shop to the W/S cadet glove(I have short fingers) it fits well but I did up the velcro tab the same as I have always done. The problem is my hand width fills the glove very well and so I was not able spread my palm in the glove. The result was when I took my grip, the glove would fold that fleshy part of my hand, and then pinch it while swinging.

Well at least I have had a pain free round today(except for the score).

One trip to the range.

Find another golf shop.

I regripped to oversize early this season with all my irons plus added 2 extra wraps undernealth. Then when I try the demo clubs at the store at the end of the season the grips feel so much smaller and causes me to grip the club differently.

This is my biggest problem when trying to demo clubs. I've got really big hands, so the demo grips feel like I'm holding pencils or something; I feel like I don't get an accurate measure of how the club will perform or feel when I use grips that fit.

They have those quick-fit head/shaft combinations for fittings; maybe they should do the same with the grip end of the shaft to help out guys who can palm a basketball off the dribble and little old ladies who can buy their gloves from the kids section. Everybody doesn't fit "standard".

Agree about the problem, but you imagine the difficulty and expense of adding
midsize and oversize grips to the inventory of interchangeable shafts. Not going
to happen.

You're probably right. Would be cool, though.

Reminds me of a time when the wife tried to by me a specialty shoe from a small company. They didn't make my size. Said that there weren't enough customers in that size range to justify the cost.

I guess that's the price you pay for being too far away from average :)

Oh man is that ever true. Try 13 B. Years ago, I could find that size in
stock at better shoe stores like Nordstrom. Not now. Order on line
and wait to see is my only choice.

Golfshoes? Haven't found any narrow widths other than Footjoy, and even within the top end ICON,or the DryJoys the 13B choices are very limited.

Golf manufactors are behind other sports when it comes to the grip size. Why not make three standard sizes oversize, midsize and regular for all their clubs?
When I buy a tennis racquet I can select between several different grip sizes usually increments of 1/4 inches diameter.

When I played hockey there were all these wood sticks with different grip sizes. I remember buying a bunch of Yzerman sticks cause the sticks were really thin diameter at the top handle.
Now that I think about it, it promoted a strong grip over the top hand neccessary for a wrist, snap or slap shot.
