Left Side Bend

Wow, is this a hard thing to get down if you don't do it every day.

BTW, BMan, you had posted a video on this in a thread, but it never worked. Can you post it up again?????

Would you explain left side bend?

Thanks,
p

For righthanders (me), there is a 'bend' created on your left side lovehandle when you make a backswing. A hooker needs to maintain that bend into the downswing to keep from going too underplane. Another way to think of it is to not add axis tilt (which would stretch the left side) too early in the downswing.

Great Question.

Axis Tilt is the tilting to the right of the golfer's torso WHILE IT ROTATES.

Right Side Bend is simply bending to the right like Mathew's pic.

Left Side bend is the opposite of Mathew's pic.

You need right side bend to get Axis Tilt, but because the golfer's torso is ROTATING, the amount changes as it unwinds.

I'm still confused. . .

Right side bend to get axis tilt makes sense. But I still don't understand the left bend and if and when you do it. Could someone spell it out? Thanks.

Some of us add axis tilt (right side bend) immediately, or very early, in the downswing. This action, for me, drops the club severely underplane and I have trouble controlling the face when that happens. Brian helped me stay on plane by keeping that left side bend a little longer (I am basically delaying the axis tilt a little) into the downswing. I think he talks briefly about it in Episode 4 of the Bman show.

so. . . .

Thanks. I suffer from the same underplane severely inside move. And I can see how some left bend would keep you more upriight. But when do you add the left bend? And wouldn't this result in a dip or lean toward the ball with your head when you're rotating back and thus a change of spine angle?

at address, you are bent over, very approx. 60*, from dtl view.

now, as you get to the top, if you maintain some of this waist bend, then your left love handle will sorta bunch up (more if you have a little substance in that area ;)). from dtl view, depending on the hip slant, left leg position and amount of waist bend, there will be around 100-110* angle between the left side of the chest and theleft leg. this is left side bend.

if you are a hooker, then trying to keep this angle into the downswing can keep the club more infront of you help you trace a plane line thats more to the left. i think brian calls this the "no tilt until after the sit-down" type downswing
