lessons, video

I use the V1 system, but somewhat sparingly. I call it the "ugly truth". Most people see the wrong things and obsess on them. Like Brian, I am very focused on Imperatives.
That said, sometimes video is necessary to knock a person into reality.
And there are many lessons where I don't even turn it on and they are some of the best.
Sometimes the "seems as if" is more important than reality.

Many Pro's don't have the money ($3000 for camera computer set up). Some are just lazy.
Their student will compensate to allow for a good shot and their teacher will then say " great shot ".
When my students pictures get better then so will their shots.

Video can be beneficial and detrimental. I find it useful, but wouldn't be lost without it.

I will generally use video for the following reasons:

1. The student demands it.
2. The student doesn't get it; understands what needs to be done, but isn't doing what they think they are doing.
3. The student is a "Visual" learner.
4. To make a record of before and after.
5. To make a recording of the lesson.

I once had a student that quit the game after seeing their motion on camara. He demand to see it, even though I knew it wasn't in his best interest. Saddest day in twenty plus years of teaching.

I was one of the first instructors in the USA to use video in ALL of my lessons.

I then went through a 'phase' where I videoed the WHOLE LESSON, like Ben Doyle does.

Then...a funny thing happened—my camera broke and I waited about 3 or 4 months to get a new one, becuase SOny told me a great model was coming out then.

Ya know what happened???

I taught BETTER.

Not just a little better, but a LOT better.

I got the new camera and then used video when I thought it would help.

For some, that's every swing, for some, NEVER.

I get SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo much better results now, it a'int funny.

But....line drawing is all the rage, even though NOONE knows how to even draw the lines in the right place and parallax make for lots of bad infomation.

Much easier hour if you spend some time in the AC drawning lines, though....

If I ever bulit a studio, I'd do it too!

I think if you REALLLY know the golf swing you will know what they're doing wrong by what you see. Granted you can't see everything, but there are effects to every cause. If you know the causes from those effects, you should know what to fix.

I guess it has to do with you making them look good on video vs. them being able to produce the Imparatives eh....

Like the David Toms example you gave.

...

How long do you work on a change before you expect to see results anyway?

Video like training aids are feedback devices. Most of the time you can accomplish the same things with a mirror, plane board or closed eye hand education but it is a tool that too many instructors rely on. I was the same as Brian. I used it as much as I could and then it broke and found that I didn't need it so much unless the student wanted to see it.
Another instructor at our facility showed a video to a lady that when she saw it she started crying because she didn't know she was so obese...
I too use V1, and Cswing which is an inexpensive software that has been as good as anything else.

To me, using video is about communication. Most students do not know what they look like or think they are doing something and they really are not. Feel is not real!

With a new student, it allows us to get down to business sooner.
