Lindsay Gahm takes 4-hour rain delay in stride at Lexmark Kentucky Women's Open

Only second player to win two in a row

Lindsay Gahm’s trips home to Louisville for the summer are starting to become predictable — reunions with friends and family and golf championships.

The Sacred Heart Academy product shot a 2-under-par 70 on Wednesday to post a one-shot victory in the rain-soaked Lexmark Kentucky Women’s Open at Oxmoor Country Club.

Gahm became the second player in the event’s 17-year history to win back-to-back titles, having also won at Champion Trace in Nicholasville, Ky., last year. Cathy Edelen (1999, 2000) and Meghan Little (2003, 2005) are the only other two-time winners.

“That’s the biggest thing, being here in Louisville and having my whole family out watching me and some friends,” said Gahm, who recently finished her junior season at Louisiana State University. “It’s always good to win any golf tournament. It’s very special for me going into the fall.”

Gahm finished with a 36-hole total of 142 after a final round that included a four-hour rain delay.
University of Alabama sophomore-to-be Emma Talley, a three-time high school state champion at Caldwell County, finished second at 72-71—143.

A pair of University of Louisville sophomores-to-be — Oldham County product Meghan Theiss (75-69—144) and Laura Restrepo (72-72—144) — tied for third.

Taryn Durham of Glasgow, Ky., was the first-round leader after a 69 but slipped to fifth place after a 76 Wednesday. She earned $1,500 as the top professional finisher in the field of 51.

Gahm’s triple-bogey on the par-3 No. 6 put her at 1-over for the tournament, but she blitzed the back nine to earn the victory.

It started with an eagle on the par-5 10th hole, where she knocked a 4-iron within 10 feet and then sank the putt.

“It had about a half-foot break to the left and a little downhill,” Gahm said. “It went right in, which feels nice.”

Gahm birdied the par-4 12th to get to 2-under before the rain came. She said she didn’t mind the delay.

“Being in college, you’re so used to that,” Gahm said. “We played in awful weather this spring. I actually had fun getting to talk to my friends again.”

A birdie on the par-3 13th pushed Gahm to 3-under, but — with no live scoring available on the course — she thought she had squandered her chance for the title when she missed a 4-foot putt and bogeyed No. 18.

It turned out not to matter as Talley — playing one group ahead of Gahm — also had bogeyed No. 18 after hitting her second shot into the water.

Talley, however, said she was pleased with her round after struggling with her putter Tuesday.
“I just had a few shots, like on 18, that just didn’t fall,” Talley said. “I had a few putts that didn’t fall, but I can’t complain. It was better, and that’s what I wanted.”

Restrepo got to 4-under after a birdie on No. 12 but faltered down the stretch, making bogey at Nos. 15 and 16 and double-bogey at No. 18.

Theiss’ 69 on Wednesday matched Durham’s score Tuesday for the best round of the tournament.
