Links golf????

Does anyone else roll their eyes when someone calls Kiawah a links course? Leave it to Dye to take a piece of property on the ocean blessed with the natural defense of high winds and demand the course be played through the air. I've even heard the term "American links" to describe it. Stop it. When did matching the layout to the property become a bad idea?

One of the commentators (think it was Feherty) just called b/s on Kiawah masquerading as links. Something along the lines of "disguised as a links, but it's not".

Not being able to run it up with these wind conditions is not fair.

"...The golf course is built right on the ocean with the greens built up, so you have to have some kind of high shot to hold the greens, but it requires a low shot to keep it out of the wind. That's a fundamental design flaw..." David Feherty, 2004

Can the criticism be more scathing than that last sentence?

If Rory (or another European wins) you'll hear on TGC something like "They have an advantage playing on a links course." Mark it down. :)

How many links courses have you seen with big water hazards (apart from the sea)? Or with watered fairways? Bunkering is different as well.

Its nothing like a links course and thats not just due to the elevated greens but the grass aswell
,

Don't forget - trees. How many trees are on The Old Course? Or, Ballyliffin, Carne, Murvagh (Donegal)? Try zip. Can you putt from 100 yds as you can on a true links course like The Old Course? Try No.

Yes, I've played those courses. Kiawah is NOT a links course.

I'm not sure what type of course it is, but I sure like the names at the top of the leaderboard. Most of them have a reputation of being a good ball striker.

Screw fair. It's golf. Go play, post your score and shut up.

That might be the title of my next book.

Nail on the head, kinnedy.

Who gives FF if it's a "classic" links or not. Hit the ball low enough to keep it under the wind but high enough to clear the hazards, keep the spin off it but still spin it enough so that it stops on the green. If you can't do that, bitch about the course in the bar like a MTD;) and go home early. I thought that was what this perverse game was all about.

Europeans are largely anti Rory

Thx Kevin. That's exactly it. :)

And fwiw, I haven't heard anyone refer to KI as a Links course...i thought it could have been based on
my initial look at it but then I read somewhere that you can only really run it up on a few holes.
Isn't also built on marsh land?

maybe on the forums, I don't really know - but I can tell you that the support for Rory at Lytham was huge. that doesn't mean that we all think he's got the ideal game for bouncing it along the ground in high winds. there's just a view, given plenty of air by his roryness, that open style golf isn't his strong suit.

I am not anti Rory. Just dont think he currently has the game to play links or wind and wasnt impressed by his childish reaction to the weather last year at The Open. With his ability he should be able to deal with tough conditions not cry about them.
