Little problem with the driver

I just wanted to say I'm sure glad I found this site so I know I'm getting the "right" information to fix my problems. Quick little story... I started slicing my driver the last week or so and wanted to quickly alleviate this mess. So today while I was at work being productive I started watching never slice again and quickly had an idea of what to look for when I get to the range. Less than one bucket of balls I had it fixed by basically not over rotating the club open on the backswing. I was opening the club too much with never a chance of squaring it back up.

Here is what I find real interesting. We have a new club pro so I stop and chat to kind of see what he knows. Let's just say he is stuck on the old ball flight laws to start with. I start telling him the problem I was having and the first thing he tells me is and I quote "You slice the ball because you are swinging outside to in." *sigh* I try to explain to him that I slice the ball because I had a open club face and that people swing outside in to try and play their slice but he looked at me like I was crazy. I then tried to explain to him a little about the D plane and how the old ball flight laws were incorrect but he was having none of it. Nothing I can do but wish him well and feel sorry for all the people paying him for lessons.

That's too bad. There was a time many, many moons ago, when I would have said the same thing. I'm glad I've been exposed to some great stuff by my colleagues and guys like Brian and staff.

I think I owe a refund to a few students back in the day;)

but it could be caused by out to in IF you go OTT

My ball flight started fairly straight and then sliced. I guess I should have included that. It didn't start left and then slice. None of my other shots were starting left and I've seen enough of my swing on video to know I was not OTT. I have hell swinging left enough as it is.

Sorry...

Are you the club pro that was giving him instruction? ;)

Out to in or OTT, doesn't slice the ball. The face is open to the OTT path and the OTT is generally the result of the face being open and the player managing the curve.

Slice - fix the face then the path.

Hook - fix the path then the face.

Can you still OTT once it's gone? I find it impossible to hit the ball OTT.

Try me :D and you will see that I can hit OTT with a closed club face so much so that I can be aiming 45 degrees right yet hook it off the planet to the left.

My previous club pro did not know what to fathom out of my swing but all is cured now that I have found this and Mike Jacob's site.

There are a big bunch of clueless club pro out there and everytime I go to the range, I pity those students who struggle with these 'experts'.

Alex, you would be a rare case.. not many OTT hookers, at least that I've seen. Generally, a path is trying to accomodate a club face issue. You compounded the two.

I'm glad you are fixed! You would have been something to watch;)

You don't have an open face.

Ha ha ha... that's what the old club pro said too. :D I kept on telling him that I am a lefty that 'learned' to play golf using right hand sets bcoz all the 2nd hand sets were right handed and I could not afford buying a new set at that time.

Generally what happened was I ended up with a very severe swivel while casting the club all the time with just my left hand in charge. Not a pretty sight to watch.

BTW, I used to top the ball a lot when I do not have good impact. Essentially, Building Blocks made a lot of changes in my coconut and I learned what a basic swing was really all about. Follow that up with SD/NSA/NHA I learned about patterns and on this site, the path and most importantly the D-Plane.

if you get OTT closed/square face it is a pull......OTT open face slice....

So based on what you just said what happens if you fix the OTT? You still have the OPEN FACE and you still slice it. Like CMartin said, fix the face first for a slice and then fix the path.

even if i have an open face coming down, i would think you rotate your arms through.....and not coming over the top????

dont disagree at all, though still most ppl that are OTT dont even know it, and many times fixing that solves a lot.

I guess I view it as such, I would not want a student out there going OTT and everyone knowing he was my student. But yes, you have to start fixing it somewhere. whether it be the face or the path. with a FLW there will not be much to fix with the face....

You can still slice with a flat lead wrist!
