Long backswing question

If the pivot allows it, I say go for it. You just don't want your arms to travel further than the pivot will allow. Grip it and rip it.
 
As long as you have a tempo and rhythm (slow rather than fast)to match the long swing and your grip doesn't come undone and you don't stray too far from the desired swing plane, it should work ok. I've been doing it that way for years and manage to play scratch/pro golf and hit it fairly long for my size.

The overswing has always been my nemesis, but that does not mean it in itself is bad. As the others said, if all your positions are good than there is nothing wrong with it. If you get there by raising up, bending your left elbow, breaking your wrists, or any other way, then look to change it. The only thing that has worked for me is to go to Homer's Hitting procedure. Presto. Shorter backswing.
