long-drive freak

I wandered into a golf superstore where I look for used clubs from time to time, and there was the usual crowd of guys standing around the hitting area with test drivers and a launch monitor (look, I hate to sound like a snob as I am really not that good a golfer, but I want to tell people - if you are a 30-year old man hitting a driver 185 yards with a slice, a new driver isn't your first need in golf). Someone I happen to sort of know is actually there hitting a new Nike driver a respectable distance (I hate the way the Nike Sumos sound and look, I would never buy one unless it did actually magically add 20 yards to my drives, and I'd still have to wear ear plugs).

Anyway, this young guy steps in to the area and hits a few drives and I didn't watch the results on spin, distance, etc., but I think, man, his swing is really, really fast. I wonder if he is any good. I shop a little more looking at wedges and then notice several people watching him hit. He's hitting drives that show up as 340-350 yards on the computer. He weighs no more than 165 pounds, and isn't over 5'10" tall. He is wearing jeans and running shoes. People's mouths are hanging open at this point.

A staff person says, wait, I'd like to see you hit one of the non-conforming drivers we have hanging around. I think it was a Cobra. He says if you hit the sweet spot there will be a high pitched "pinging" sound. This freak then hits it and on the second shot hits the sweet spot -- ping -- 365 yards. He does it again, same distance. Talk about sustaining lag and fast hands. It was an amazing display.

I play with a guy that enters statewide pro events and can carry it 300 plus and it's just freaking amazing. It's just a totally different game for him. He cuts doglegs I could never even think about. It's like you watch him tee off and just shake your head.:(

if only

yeah, and then there's the kid in the cart barn and the guy who played for the club hockey team - if only they could putt

this is why greg norman, nicklaus and others were saying they need to make the golf ball fly 250-280 max because land is too expensive to keep making courses longer and longer....

Wonder if REMAX long drive competitions will ever be at sea level with tour quality balls so that numbers like can actually be compared to what pga tour long hitters drive it.

Blah, do long hitters have an advantage? Yes, do all of them consistently win tournaments?

No.

I love Jamie's pivot though, being someone who's still trying to "wallop the ball with my pivot". Sometimes it doesn't even LOOK that fast but you know it's insane.

I watch a lot of long driving on TV and am coming to the conclusion that most of the longer guys are simply very well-timed flippers.....
