Long swing and Pivot

Was messing around at the range, and decided (for no real reason) to let my swing go long (well past parallel). Not only did I hit the ball better, and longer, but my pivot improved. When I stop at parallel, the upper half of my torso tends to tip over toward the target at the top (reverse pivot) and I have to back up at impact; when I went long, not tipover. Isn't this the opposite of what normally happens? Any of you instructors ever see someone make a better swing when the swing is "too long"? Why would this be the case?

If you're going long without a reverse, i'm betting you softened your elbows and wrists which could give you a little more lag in the transition and more zip at the bottom. No loss of control, you say?

The butt of the club in relation to the ball cannot narow on the backswing! The key to distance and consistency is the positioning of the hips farther from the ball, the right shoulder closer to to the ball and the left side stretching to impact. This is the key to consistency of delivery and maximizing your kinetic energy from potential energy. MK

I gotcha. I don't think that I'm fitting into that category (narrowing), unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying when you talk about the relation of the butt of the club to the ball. Could you break that down a bit more?
