Longer backswing

Hello manzella forum,

I have a random question. I have recently noticed that on the course my driver swing is way short of parallel. When I get short I hit a lot of quick hooks. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the backswing longer? By the way, I do not have flexibility issues. Thanks for your help. Kermit

1. Is it short of parallel on the practice range? If no, then perhaps problem is the effect of actually playing golf on
a golf course. The mind can really screw up a swing.

2. No flexibility issues, could suggest that the problem is in your grip, i. e, are you gripping it in the palm of your
lead hand.

3. Your statement about hooks implies that short backswing causes your hooks. Does that mean that longer
backswing does not cause you to hook?

as softconsult has hinted, length of the backswing does not necessarily cause hooks. something else is going on.

i just want to point out something for thoughts, among many things that warrant evaluation. under stress (or lost in the moment), we tend to rush or play in a faster tempo. a faster tempo often leads to an incomplete backswing---before the chest is fully turned, the hips already fire. that can leave the arms too inside and face way too open. to compensate, we flip the wrists...

Bascially what happens is that when my arm swing gets short I feel like the club is open and I slam the face shut with the right hand on the downswing. I don't do this move when my backswing reaches parallel. I know it is partially caused by anxiety but was wondering if something in my pivot could hinder me from getting the club to parallel. I try to feel like jOhn daly and it is still short. Thanks for the help. Kermit
