Loose not Solid!

Hi,

I dont know if this is common with us young players or not, but I see my swing on video and the club doesent seem real stable and solid in the backswing. Like you see tiger, luke donald especially, in there backswing it seems so under control and the club moves up on a plane without any loose movements from the club.

Is this common for youngsters? And is it just because of not great wrist and forarm strentgh which causes this to happen?

Brian Barnes was speaking about Michelle wie on skysports tonight and he was saying the older she gets the more solid and firm her swing will become and it will become more easier for her to hit it straight and not rely so much on timing and rythum.

here is my swing, www.putfile.com/rickyharris click on the windows media player box.

I hope you get what I mean.

Many Thanks
Ricky

Doesn't seem to me that your concern is a problem for you. If you feel the club slipping a bit in your hands near the top there are three things that would be worth a try: (1) adjust your grip, check out Steve Elkington's chapter on the grip, particularly where he shows how to make it airtight; (2) try to set the club earlier in the backswing (much like Johnny Miller); (3) strengthen your forearms. This is the order I'd try them out. If you do a face-on view it might be easier to make sure if your concern is a problem.

Matt, where do I read about this? I have strong forearms but the club still turns some on me occasionally.

His book is Steve Elkington's Five Fundamentals of Golf.

Elkington has one of the best grips of all time. This chapter is worth the price of the book alone, hell, the pictures of his grip are worth the price of the book alone. You may be able to find it at a local library though.

Also the book has some flip book type sequences in the corner of Elk's beautiful motion.

You are right about the chapter on the grip, it is excellent. I picked up Elkington's book at Half Price Books for $8; one of the better deals on the golf books I have bought.

you have hogans book, well there are a couple tips in there that may help you get it under control at the top a little more. 2 small minor grip adjustments would be
1. shorten your left thumb
2. take your right hand and hold it out in front of you with all the fingers spread, see how there is space between your thumb and your hand, nowtake the thumb and bring it next to the hand where there us no space before the knuckle on that thumb. now put it on the club like that and keep it together on the swing. that should steady it at the top some.
swing looks good ricky
