back of middle.....hands in impact condition.....so the club is pretty delofted....pick it up with your right forearm....zero pivot....use a hitting motion and hit the back of the ball (like a pull swing) make sure you hit down and through.
you have to have the balls to hit it hard knowing it will check. And you have to hit it crisply and compress it. The tighter the lie, the better, I find.
Ball back in stance. Hands ahead of clubhead, left wrist flat. Pick it up and hammer down on it. Make sure to take a little 'nip' of a divot. Harder the lie the better, and it'll skip and check better on faster greens. Soft, shaggy greens just take the spin off once it hits so it's hard to judge how far it'll go.
I can attest to that. I play almost exclusively on a course with soft, shaggy greens with spongy surrounds.. I get hardly any bite on these shots and often wonder what im doing wrong. But when I play on a track with firmer conditions, I see MUCH more check. It's Very annoying to say the least
Matt describes it well, and you do have to practice to have faith. I played that shot last weekend and the group thought it was going to go over the green, .....it actually checked up too short!
