Making some progress

With a lot of help from cmartingolf, I've been making some progress! I started off earlier this year going over NSA and COFF, and I think that I've started to make some improvements. I think my impact condition is a lot better and a lot less flippy, and my swing is shorter and tighter as well. There are still a lot of things that I need to work on.... but so far I'm pretty happy with my progress.

14 to a 5? That's great progress. Your 14-cap swing was dated only July - if you've dropped the shots in 3 months, that's phenomenal. Well done both of you anyways. And it's hard to believe that the best isn't still to come.

Impressive!

You have really reduced the open club face!

In comparison of 9-iron DTL July 29 (22 sec) to 9-iron DTL 2 Sept 17 (08 sec) the clubface is at least 45 degrees less open. Also left wrist is no longer cupped at top. I also see you are taking club back with clubhead more outside of your hands. Finally, grip looks like heelpad is more on top and slightly stronger in left hand compared to previous.

Right thumb could still be more across the midline instead of on top, IMHO.

Great results.

Your changes mirror Brian's golf channel entry.

Its been a pretty big change for me this year. The dates on the videos are correct as well, as I didn't get out of med school until the middle of June. When I was an undergrad a few years ago and could play the whole summer (worked at a local course) I could time my flip and hip slide and played to about an 8 cap....but a very erratic 8 cap (some days around my cap...others more like a 15 or 16 cap).

Being in med school, and having a shorter summer meant that I couldn't play as much golf and my timing went out the window. As you can imagine without good timing the flip and slide move is pretty tough to control and my handicap floated around 12 to 14.

Martin started by working on my grip (especially the left hand) which was very weak. That took some time to get used to, but I started to hit some better shots. We then focused on my hand position at address such that I had a cupped left wrist instead of my big forward press.

Finally (this is where I'm at currently), we've been working right arm extension to help control the length of my swing. To be honest, I feel like my right arm doesn't bend at the elbow at all right now (although it obviously does). This has made the biggest change to my swing, especially my impact position. One caveat I found (if anyone is thinking of trying this) is that in trying to have the arm extension you have to make sure your wrists still cock. Short of that, it feels a little strange at first but I'm getting used to it quickly... and I can't argue with the results!

The other biggest change I noticed is that I went from hitting a draw/hook to hitting a little fade, which I think is a result of losing a lot of the slide (which allowed me to come WAY from the inside). I don't miss the occasional 40 yard "power draw" on my 9 iron btw :p

Once again, I would like to thank Martin! He is a fantastic instructor and person!

Martin, what have you guys focused on the most?

I forget:)

I wasn't nuts about his grip, path and he had a massive Daly-esque backswing. We talked about a strengthened left hand (a little), added some carry and talked a lot about right arm extensor action. His action is has a better sequence.

Been messing around trying to shorten my swing and this did it.Taking lessons from 1944 PGA champion Bob Hamilton in 1976 he increased my shoulder turn then had me hittings balls with pressure on the left thumb to shorten my swing. He was teaching me extensor action but I did not really understand until I saw your before and after video and read your paragraph above. Thanks.

You have a powerful/dynamic looking swing (both versions!). I would have guessed much lower handicap. Are you averaging 33 putts a round or something (that is meant as a compliment, btw)?

I'm a pretty awful putter....tried switching it up quite a few times but with no real success. I'm using a long putter right now (with a little shame) and its ok, but still pretty bad.
