Its been a pretty big change for me this year. The dates on the videos are correct as well, as I didn't get out of med school until the middle of June. When I was an undergrad a few years ago and could play the whole summer (worked at a local course) I could time my flip and hip slide and played to about an 8 cap....but a very erratic 8 cap (some days around my cap...others more like a 15 or 16 cap).
Being in med school, and having a shorter summer meant that I couldn't play as much golf and my timing went out the window. As you can imagine without good timing the flip and slide move is pretty tough to control and my handicap floated around 12 to 14.
Martin started by working on my grip (especially the left hand) which was very weak. That took some time to get used to, but I started to hit some better shots. We then focused on my hand position at address such that I had a cupped left wrist instead of my big forward press.
Finally (this is where I'm at currently), we've been working right arm extension to help control the length of my swing. To be honest, I feel like my right arm doesn't bend at the elbow at all right now (although it obviously does). This has made the biggest change to my swing, especially my impact position. One caveat I found (if anyone is thinking of trying this) is that in trying to have the arm extension you have to make sure your wrists still cock. Short of that, it feels a little strange at first but I'm getting used to it quickly... and I can't argue with the results!
The other biggest change I noticed is that I went from hitting a draw/hook to hitting a little fade, which I think is a result of losing a lot of the slide (which allowed me to come WAY from the inside). I don't miss the occasional 40 yard "power draw" on my 9 iron btw
Once again, I would like to thank Martin! He is a fantastic instructor and person!
