PGATOUR.COM - Champions Tour Insider: How Goodes*shot a 57
Pretty impressive round and a fun story.
31-26 on a par 71 Greensboro Country Club. He was 10 under at #13 and missed two birdie putts on 17 and 18
His playing partner shot 67 and lost by 10
I know Goodes, and I know the course like the back of my hand. Grew up on the course, played it more times than I can count. Parents are still members there.
The course is only 6200 tipped out, but there's OB on every hole and the greens are very fast and slopy. It's a Donald Ross original design and is a great old course, lots of character as it meanders through a section of Greensboro called Old Irving Park.
Goodes was 12 under in a 10 hole stretch from 7-16. 7 is a reachable par 5 and 8 is a 460 yard par 5. 13 is an extremely tight but very drivable par 4 and 14 is a 500 yard par 5 that plays shorter. 18 is a very easy birdie hole and it's only somewhat surprising he didn't birdie it.
The fact that he was only 2 under through 6 was surprising. 1 and 5 are easy holes and 2 is a 475 yard par 5.
The real kicker? He came back a day or two later and played it again. The result? 60
