"Modern Golf Swing"

Brian what do you think when ppl talk about the "modern golf swing" vs. the hickory shaft days?

I have no clue if there's really any difference but I was just reading about how Byron Nelson is the "inventor of the modern golf swing" and I thought I'd pass it by you.

......

quote:"Nelson turned pro in 1932 and his swing is considered by many golf historians the first "modern" swing (it served as the model for the mechanical testing robot that came to be known as "Iron Byron").

The World Golf Hall of Fame explains: "Coming of age just as the steel shaft was replacing hickory, Nelson learned that using the big muscles in the hips and legs could be a more reliable, powerful, and effective way to hit a golf ball than the more wristy method that had been employed in the era of hickory. Nelson was particularly noteworthy for the way his swing was more upright and along the target line, employing a full shoulder turn with restricted wrist cock, and for the way he kept his knees flexed in the downswing."

Paul, here's my opinion of this idea: invalid.
Don't you think Nicklaus' swing(even with hickory) would have been at least as
competitive as those old throw-timing wrist-rollers?
And don't you thing Bobby Jones' swing would still be awesome with today's equip-
ment?
Byron was good with whatever equipment..he just happened to be the man at the time of the chage to steel.

We humans are pattern-seeking and story-telling creatures. It sometimes clouds
our ability to reason.
Hey, look at that, I got a star! We are also proud and seek approval. Sophomore, baby!
Who's the loser now?

Ahahaha now you've got some credibility eh Bill :).

....

Ya I remember hearing something about Fuzzy (I think) going and playing with some hickory clubs....he said he played pretty good....and hit some pretty good shots without changing his swing much, if at all.

....

I'd think you'd have to be a little more smooth if anything though....and it prolly wouldn't be good for Hitters (too whippy).

Ya I dunno, ppl talk about the modern swing, etc....I wouldn't

Doing casual scan at today's player's, their swings look a lot more similar than 25+ years ago, where there were a wide range of different patterns.

Brian said in one of his podcasts that player's are hitting it futher today because they're hitting it harder. But I still think Nicklaus, Nelson, Hogan, Snead would be easily averaging 280 yards or more with todays fairways, balls, shafts, and clubheads, without trying to hit any harder.

Question to those who know Ben Doyle well: does Ben think Tiger "overaccelerates"?

Not Ben, nor do I know him, but I certainly think he does when 'swinging'. It is one of the core problems with his motion at the moment.

If he is going to continue to be a swinger, he needs to work on his flying wedges at setup. He was best (so far) as a hitter but he's lost the right wedge.

He needs to get the Rhythm of a swinger. The transition is way too fast and not smooooooooth as it should be. He needs to swing 'in slow motion'.

I don't think Tiger really ever Hit with his driver. If he did, it's more of a Switter's stroke rather than a proper Hit. He's always had this super-quick explosive looking movement ever since he was a kid...
