Drill - The Clamp

(maintaining the level and bent right wrist - club and forearm as an angled extension of each other)

Clamp.jpg

Step 1 - Grip down the grip and clamp the club to your forearm with your left hand.

Step 2 - Swing back and then take left hand off and only allow bend (no cocking) in the right wrist.....

Chances are it feels very different to what you felt before...

Concept - Fanning right forearm

Really what is mean't by this move is lateral rotation of the arm. This pic will make it really easy to see...

Concept - Checkrein action of left arm

Because the left arm is a constant length you will encounter problems when the right forearm fans, you need to allow the proper checkrein action by bending the arm upwards independant of the lower arm.

This is what is meant when you need to be in a position to slap at the ball...

Great pics mathew, thanks for putting them up!

The 'fan' of the forearm - it can be very helpful to pay attention to the 'pivot' of the forearm around the elbow. The elbow doesn't move much during takeaway, everything pivots around it and it goes up plane, the tip of the elbow staying on the same plane back and through. A 'throw' down the planeboard.

A figure 8 strap can be a great way to feel some of the things these pictures describe.

Matthew,

I don't want to misuse your clamp drill. Is it just to get the feel of right wrist level bend? Because it does not appear the club is pointing at the plane line when not parallel. And to clarify, your right arm cannot really achieve those positions in the last pics because of your straight left arm and extensor action, right? - Just making sure I am extracting the proper message from your post.

The only real purpose of my clamp drill was to teach the feeling of right forearm being the angled extension of the club due to the right wrist being level and bent.

Yes, you will find that the fanning motion cannot happen without the checkrein action because of the constant length of the left arm....

Said Clifford Roberts to Sam Snead after a Master's practice round.

If it worked for Snead, it is O.K with me.
Hey, what is the dress code on this forum anyway?:D

So the fanning motion looks like there is no swivel, ie no wrist rotation. Looks like a horizontal hinge, similar to what happens during the impact-followthrough interval. Interesting.

I assume the swivel/ wrist turn for swingers occurs right after the fan. I had those 2 motions happening at the same time.

Is it correct that the forearm will face downward, and the face will look closer at the top? I am a swinger, my instructor told me that the forearm tracing the plane line should have the right forearm unturn and more facing the floor, same as the above pictures. I found it easier to do with a driver, and more roll with irons as the forearm is say 45degree at address.

Now, the confusion is he told me that this is more a hitting procedure, but I am still using the leftarm for roll on downswing, no feeling on #1. Is the fanning of the right froearm the same for swinging and hitting.

I would like to thanks Mattew for the pictures including in other threads, it is really helpful.
