My hopes for the new forum and Project 1.68

Much like everyone else I'm really looking forward to the unveiling of the new website/forum as well as Project 1.68.

As a relatively new golfer, who has only managed to break 100 once in my 5+ years of golf (thanks mostly to a great day of putting - if that puts some context into how I managed to do it), I hope I'm not out of line by expressing my hope that the next incarnation of this excellent source of golf information starts with the absolute basics.

By that I mean things like "recommended" grip, foot placement, width of stance, posture, bending over, spine tilt, alignment, distance from ball, ball placement (e.g. constant vs. moving it around), takeaway, length of backswing, pivot, weight transfer, follow through, and so on and so on.

I know that there's all kinds of info on the above to be found in the forum but with the advent of Project 1.68, which I'm sure will be taking into account all the "new" science of the golf swing that has been revealed through new technologies, I'm hoping that a clearer simpler picture of how best to take advantage of this new info will be the first outcome.

I, for one, will still be re-watching Brian's videos (e.g. BB, NSA, NHA, SD), that is as long as they're still valid (which I figure they will be) but it sure would be a boon to a duffer like me to be able to concentrate on "new and improved" basics while shedding some of the often contradictory info I've accumulated to date (my fault) that has pretty much stalled any real improvement in my game.

I guess the bottom line is I'm hoping for a new starting point, using information presented here, that I can use when I step up to the first tee of 2011. Brian, do you think that's in the cards?

Best holiday wishes to everyone!!!

I'm thinking Brian will come out with about three new patterns, and there will be new life in the Matrix, whereby a golfer's tendencies are reviewed and a pattern is suggested to get him out of the bad habit(s) and producing desired impact and ball flight.

However, what may also be emphasized is that lots of less than optimal stances and grips can produce zero'd out impacts....so the golfer can pick his poison so to speak as long as good impact is achieved.

I can't imagine that this new project will cover every time proven fundamental. I hope it is more of a "Here are the new things we have learned." sort of thing.

Seems to me that if, assuming you are physically able, you have not learned enough to break 100, then you should question how you have been going about learning the game. We don't know much from your post. Playing golf for 5+ years could have a wide variety of
meaning. For instance, you play once a year, or you play 40 times a year, but don't practice.

What you do say is that you are looking for this new project to help you start with the absolute basics. The basic fundamentals already exist and are unlikely to be thrown out by this project.

Just my opinion.

Brian has already said that when he fixes people he usually does not fix their crazy grips and a lot of other pre-conceived malarkey if he can just get them to good impact without doing so. This makes it easier for the golfer go with and do the new 'swing.'

I'm just not sure how the Matrix idea would hold up with such details finnessed by saying such n such can be ignored...maybe it would be like "pick a desired tripod and then do such n such", and the more left you are stacked then you will need more help to lower the angle of attack (or whatever). If Project 1.68 has a framework of components to build multiple swings from, that would be cool...but I have no idea what might come out.

Also as a future area, if I have have pretty good impact on 70% of full shots and I want to know how to get a higher swing speed, I'm thinking that info may not come out of this project.

softconsult,

I figure I've probably played 15-20 times a year over the last 5 years. I go to the range sporadically and usually just hit driver and 3 wood because I don't like to hit irons off the mat.

Yeah, I really have been questioning how I've been learning the game, esp. considering that I'm pretty much stalled right now. I have, however, decided to stick with this site as my source of all golf information so that should at least keep me away from trying out the latest fads, quick tips, etc. which only resulted in me trying different things week to week and even shot to shot and not figuring out what is the "right way" for me.

I don't expect this site or Project 1.68 to pander to high handicapping hackers like me but I do hope someone with my (lack of) talent will be able to take at least some of the info offered up on the new website/forum and Project 1.68 to the range to try out.

While I think it's great that folks here are able to have discussions on VSP and HSP and can figure out what a list of TrackMan numbers mean, I'm in the camp thinking would it be better if my trailing foot was perpendicular to the target line or slightly flared out, or should I keep the ball in a constant position or move it around.

I'm just hoping that the new site and 1.68 don't leave folks like me in the dust, out in left field or simply SOL.

NEVER

NEVER Going to happen

we might have to learn a few different things and a different way of approaching it

but Brian....will NOT EVER LEAVE 'US' OUT

As a follow up question, will the old patterns be updated, or do they need updating? I know there are a few things ive noticed in the vidoes that appear to no longer be true i.e. NHA2 Brian recommends hitting down on a driver. Or are the old patterns confirmed via the new research?

AJ,

I'm sure you're right and I hope nobody thinks I'm trying to tell Brian how this site should be run, but it's imperative that I whup my regular playing partner this upcoming year. :>)

Btw, I like your idea above of "chapters" if there's an area on the new site that can be used by hackers to begin new discussions on the fundamentals.

/off soapbox

I really like how svenster responded. Particularly the part about wanting to beat his playing partner next year. Sounds like your average golfer. Really doesn't practice much. That is in contrast to many of us, who are overly focused and more than somewhat obsessed with this game.

Svenster, if you haven't already done so, you should buy a couple (or all) of the videos available on this site. Particularly, "Building Blocks", "Confessions of a Former Flipper", and "Never Slice Again". For the price of 5 buckets of balls, you get a wealth of helpful information. You need to watch each of them 3 or 4 times to really pick up the nuggets.

Good luck!

on this site my friend you NEVER have to be shy about making suggestions

Brian has a plan I am sure, but i have NEVER known him not to listen

we really need to wait to get answers to questions like yours

I know WE are all in a hurry, but that's what makes it exciting..

hitting down on driver?? hitting up on driver?....WE shall soon find out

Yesyes- ask any question! Even if it has been asked before, or whatever. It's good to revisit things anyway, with all the new stuff being learned constantly.

Even if Brian or the MGA doesn't answer you'll normally get some pretty good answers from others in here. We all learn from Brian...lots of posters know much of the stuff he has shared pretty well.

I'll say that esp lately I feel I need to be careful w what I say. There has been so much change w Trackman, I ain't MGA, etc. But we've still been given a lot of info which we can use, and I try not to give out absolutes.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll hold off on all my questions for now until we see the new layout/format of the site.

Oh, and fwiw I'll definitely be putting in a lot more practice time this year, re-watching my set of Brian's videos, and of course coming here daily.

Definitely looking forward to whatever Brian has in store.

FORE!!!

I am beginning to wonder whether the 1.68 project will beat Lynn Blake's "Long Game" video to the market place of ideas.

Just kidding Brian.

BTW now that you have jettisoned the TGM, are you going to be using a new set of terminology to talk about the golf swing?

After five or so readings of the book, I was just starting to get to feeling I was getting a handle on what Homer was talking about so I sort of have a vested interest in the terminology issue.
