My Left Foot

I tend to have a left foot that swivels a little during the swing and some of my misses are pulls where my hips have overturned. When I look up after my swing, my upper body and lower body have turned past the target up to the left.

It seems to me that many old timers lifted their heal off the ground and set it back down during the swing, while today's players are gererally seem to keep their heal down. Though I notice Phil moves his foot.

Does Brian, et el recommend a startionary left foot? Is it better to have the left foot stationary and nailed to the ground to produce consistent shots?

The left foot is an issue in my swing. I lift the left heel to help with a full shoulder turn, but people I play with notice that I end up lifting my heel, and then pivoting on the ball of my foot, so then on the downswing I have turned my felt foot more than 45* toward the target. One of my friends asked me if I was practicing my softball swing. I really have to concentrate on keeping my left foot planted or I end up doing this. When my foot pivots in my swing, I end up toe hitting my irons and driver as I think I over-rotate on the downswing and/or my hips get to far left and back... an effort to get a bigger turn ended up as a nasty habit for me.

I call it "left foot spin-out" which probably comes from years of baseball swing where I have brought my hips through quickly, just prior to my weight getting tot he the left side. I have been watching the pros and their left feet a lot lately. Seems like the old-times lifted their left heal on the back swing, than planted it as they started down, but the young guys keep the left foot on the ground.
