My son's swing *updated*

Please help me out. My son is 6 and is a pretty dang good player. However, he's just not hitting it the best anymore. He was nailing his shots until I tried to fix a little chicken wing he had going on. Tried having him rotate his left arm after the shot - instantly started hitting it bad and can't get back to where he was.

I wish I had a video of the before but I don't. The only thing I can tell is different is the very top of his backswing, it just looks DIFFERENT. Not much wrist cock is what I think of first but I don't know squat about the golf swing. He also has changed his finish at the end. He was hitting his driver consistently over 100 yards and now he's sending most of them low, left and much shorter. Irons the same, can't get them in the air with distance.

Any thoughts/tips/drills would be GREAT. This guy is gonna be a good one, just have to get him back on track. He's got a very good short game and if I can get him back on track with the long game I'm gonna put him in some tournaments. THANKS!!

Strong right hand made him chicken wing it, I suppose. Now he turns it down. Get some loft on the club by making his grip better and see if it does anything. Can't really do anything technical with aa kid that age.

Pay him $1 every time he hits it hard. Pay him $2 for every putt over 10' he makes. Age and strength will help him with the other bits in between. :)

his head rotates a lot for a young person.
i might have him hit a lot of punch shots to clean up his triangle.
and keep him passionate and competitive, most importantly.

He LOVES putting and he's good at it. Also likes to chip/pitch. It's just frustrating when you can't drive or hit anything in the fairway. He was hitting it so well earlier it wasn't even funny. I keep telling him that he'll get his swing back and that the short game is what matters the most.

Dear curtisj and son,

What a good looking swing, but he already is swinging TOO fast a tempo, and it exceeds his natural torsional angular rate.

It is most evident from the DTL clip and appears as a slight OOT move.

From a 'science-based standpoint' I would suggest two things:

(1) WITHOUT A BALL have him take 5-10 CONTINUOUS BACK AND FORTH FULL SWINGS AND FOLLOW THRU similar to a metronome, back and forth, back and forth etc. Probably for him, five half' energy, then five full energy swings will be enough for both of you to DETERMINE his NATURAL TEMPO. Anything different than this 'practice-determined tempo' will result in timing and swing path errors, as some form of compensation during the downswing will be necessary. His seems be the slight OOT move to account for the too fast back swing, and the compensations made during the transition and early down swing closing the club face and significantly reducing the resultant vertical launch angle

(2), since I see a bit of lower body dynamic 'imbalance', I suggest he just bend his knees a bit, and if that set-up change alone( ie. maybe 1 inch lower) doesn't result in the ball going towards the target, teach him the 'Bumpy back, keep it back' set-up change along with his knees SLIGHTLY bent.

There seems to be earlier responses from professional teachers which I am sure will also be of great value to your son.

Good luck, and please post how these suggested changes affect your sons results.

Sincerely,
art

Thanks guys, I'm so happy for him. He was getting bummed but is feeling good now.

My game has gotten much better in the last week as well but I get more enjoyment out of watching him improve.

PS He came 1/4 of an inch from his first legit par today, putt lipped out. Not bad considering his dad hooked his in the woods and his mom pushed hers over into the tall grass. :)

Good stuff Curtis! My stepson just started playing last year ( he is a little older - 14 ) His last name is Heiner. He got his 1st legit par on a par 3 hole. As soon as the putt sank, my best bro dubbed it... wait for it... the "Heiner" hole!

When did your son start with golf? I can't wait to take my little one out on the course but I guess I still have to wait a few years. He has just turned 3 and likes to putt but after 3 putts he normally finds something else to do ;-)

He started swinging very young with a plastic club. Not one of those big fat plastic clubs but a "nicer" club with a lightweight metal like shaft. I kid you not he had the best looking swing as a 3 year old with that thing. Looked better than any adult I know.

He started golfing on the course around age 4. Had a legit bogey on a par 3, it was pretty cool. Then last year we hardly golfed so he lost some of his mojo but he's getting it back.

I hate parent's that don't stop talking about their kids but he is one of the most gifted athletes I know. I don't care what it is, you show him something and he can do it. He started wrestling this year and ended up being one of the best wrestlers for his weight. Things just come easy for him.
