Well, I just finished up today. Just thought I'd share a few things.

First, what I learned about myself. Im very comfortable in those surroundings. Ive always enjoyed spectators at sporting events. I pitched in front of 5000 people against China in the Pony League World Series at 13 so its not something new. The problem is going into the events with a respectable game. The best I played was in 2003 in Erie when I was on the front page of the leaderboard for most of the event.

Coming off a good win and even better ballstriking last week I was really looking forward to this week. Secretly I thought i could contend. But 3 days of lessons and one Monday qualifier caddy job (for a student of mine) left me with some degree of limited practice. I was unable to recapture the same feels and regressed into the same underturned, tugging, backed up move that has plagued me my whole life. I birdied my first two holes but fought the swing and putter the whole day and one loose swing (triple bogey) had me reeling with a 76.

Played better in the second round. -3 thru 14. Gunned a birdie putt on 15 trying to make the cut and 3 putted. Mathmatically eliminated I kinda sleptwalked thru the last 4 and posted 72. Truthfully a very disappointing event altogether.

About the tour: Many more foreign born players then my last event (2006) White belts, undersized shirts, J. Lindenburg pants as far as the eye can see so I need to fashion up. Swings were fast on the whole but alot of solid moves. I may go out and watch some tomorrow. Typically though, the grillroom stories from the leaders involved alot of made 30 footers and chips. But there are some steady rounds too. (not to imply that everyone is getting it done with crazy stuff) More triples and doubles here than Im sure they are used to with all the OB and hazards and slopes.

A side note: You cant believe how many guys aim left and start the ball right. If anyone has a thought or question please chime in

Why do you think that is Kevin? Are they hitting down on it a bunch or just swing to far right or both? What tour were you playing? Hooters? Do you thinks the guys are getting better?

A friend of mine went over to play on it for a year. 500 bucks per entry, another 300 for food and accom and the cut was 4 or 5 under every week. He went broke pretty fast! That was 12 years ago. He said the guys were coming out of college and just going beserk :D

It sucks that you didn't have the type of tournament you were hoping for, but I think it says a lot that you had a big event coming up and still gave lessons and caddied for a student.

I would say a combo of both. I think a little more based on the Horizontal Swing Plane but its just a guess.

"Backed up move"???

I've heard this term used before, but I have no idea what it means with regards to a good player.

IMO, those golfers are just hitting push fades instead of pull fades from what I've gathered.

Anyway, even though you didn't reach your goals, you have a lot to be proud of. Keep chipping away and good things will happen.

I know you are disappointed. However, even though you missed the cut, you beat a bunch of guys who do this week in and week out.

You said it yourself, life kinda got in the way last week and you didn't practice a whole lot. Those guys grind it...every day, every week...it's their job and you beat a lot of them. I think that says a lot for your game. I followed you via pgatour.com and thought you were on a roll to get it close to making the cut.

If you think about it, one bad hole cost you...that's it. You accomplished a lot, in spite of what you may think.

Best of luck in the future.

Very proud of you Kevin! Just take away the positives and discard the negatives about the week. Keep getting a little better each and every day!

A life spent chasing dreams is a life well spent.

Kevin, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate the insights. It's tough to go into those conditions and play well when you don't have a full diet of competition. Not impossible for a guy with your game, just really hard.

Kevin, sorry to hear that you didn't get to perform the way you know you can.

I know you wrote your post to give the rest of us a flavour of Nationwide tour from inside the ropes - somewhere we aren't going to get on the whole....even as caddies ;).... but I wonder if the fashion and the 30 foot chip-in stories you mentioned are actually something that put you off your game...

The performance under spectator pressure bit is something that you have to want and it sounds like you got that bit sorted....but what did you feel when you saw all the white belts etc...maybe if you thought anything it was too much thinking about them and not enough about your game...

If you want to contend in that arena and the contenders are chipping in from 30 feet...then chipping in from 30 feet must become your norm... not something to be seen as a fluke to be bragged about in the bar...just what you do...

Hope I have not come across as too pseudo-psychology BS...I run the risk of Self-Mastery's pithy wit....but you only become confortable when the exceptional becomes your norm...then the young kids will be noticing how odd they look in the JL gear and why aren't they dressing like you !!

Good luck!

I actually embrace that kind of game. Ive always known its all inside 50 yards. I was just mentioning it to relate to the forum members that alot of tour rounds under 68 have alot of 30 footers and chip ins.

I was there partially to observe and take in some info to improve as a teacher. I am a teacher, not a player, by trade. It would have been nice to play a little better but I have no illusions of playing full time.

Congratulations again Kevin. Not only are you a great teacher but you are also a great player, not too many people can say that. Thank you for your insight.

At this early stage post-tournament, what things did you pick up that would help you the most in your teaching?

It's cool that, even though you were out there competing for yourself, you still were looking to use it to improve as a teacher.

Not anything yet that I could verbalize....still sorting through it. I sat and watched alot of shots and frankly didnt see alot of swings that blew me away. It is the minor leauges, keep in mind. Its still quite a jump from triple A to the bigs.

Kevin, what did you think of Sam Saunders game? I see you were paired with him. Does he have game or is he riding his grandpa's coat tails, I am sure invites are pretty easy to come by for him.

What a totsl gentleman, great kid. Not a negative thing to say.

His game? Bombs it, definately. Moves it quite a bit right to left, too much imo. Wedges need work. Lots of talent plus a really good kid.
