Hey gang - pay close attention to the field at this week's NEC Invitational
If you are wondering how players such as Colin Montgomery, Bernhard Langer, Philip Price and Jesper Parnevik made the field - well, I'll tell you. They were members of the 2002 European Ryder Cup Team.
Huh?? Wait-A-Minute! 2002 ?? Why not 2004 ??
BECAUSE -- Europe doesn't finalize its 2004 Ryder Cup squad until August 30th, a good TWO WEEKS after the US has named its team of 12.
And that's also TWO WEEKS AFTER the playing of the NEC Invitational, an event originally created to showcase members on all sides of the most recently-named Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup Teams. This was supposed to mean players on teams playing either in the current year's Cup Matches or the preceding year's Cup Matches.
The NEC event has since expanded to include Top 50 World Rankings, plus winners of worldwide events with a World Rankings Field Strength rating of at least 100.
This is definitely one event where they HAVE NOT gotten it right !!
