I am young and fairly athletic with what seems to be a decent swing. I control the ball fairly well and play in the 70's. Problem is with distance, especially the irons. I hit my 7 iron maybe 140 on a well struck shot. I use what is essentially the NSA pattern. I don't feel like I'm flipping and make decent contact with a forward divot. But somehow it seems as though no matter what I do I lose all my "umph" before impact. Instead of a low boring flight it seems as though the ball balloons off the face. My only miss is the occasional fat shot, but for the most part the balls does what I want. I'm thinking maybe I'm too steep but not sure. Any ideas?

This is only a guess, while you may not be flipping, you may be scooping. The irons should be hit with a descending blow while the driver should be struck with an ascending blow. The fact"....especially the irons." leads me to believe you are scooping and lifting up or releasing too soon. You may experiement with the hands further ahead with irons at impact, this will encourage a more descending blow.
Check also ball position just for the heck of it, if the ball is too far forward you could be getting under the ball instead of on top of the ball.
Remember hit down to make the ball go up-with irons.

One simple answer and drill that can help is the "swoosh" drill. Get a 4 iron and grip it in the opposite end. Now make some swings and pay attention to the swoosh sound. If you hear the swoosh sound at about impact or a bit after, then you're releasing at the right time. BUT, if you hear the swoosh before impact, then you're flipping or releasing too early which will give some weak high balls like you said.
