Was taught by 1944 PGA champion Bob Hamilton to waggle 2 times, slight kick in of right knee and hit it. Was taught to take the same amount of time over the ball each shot. The main reason for the waggle and preshot routine was to be able to perform under pressure. Mind was focused on this routine and swing just happened. Had great success with it but like Brian just thru the years got away from it. Having watched Watson play with the waggle under pressure so well this last weekend may have me take another look at it.

Good explanation of a misunderstood concept. I'm a fan of waggling with a purpose! I think the waggle helps MOST people with the creation and imagination necessary for a good shot. Thanks Brian.

For me the waggle is the most "natural" part of my swing. It's something I don't even think about. I couldn't even tell you how many times I waggle.

I had a pro help me with the waggle one time, and he saw a lot of "bad things" in my waggle...the main one being that on the downswing of the waggle I was lagging the shaft toward the ball. It's tough to get it right when you have something bad ingrained.

Also, my concept was that a waggle was to loosen up the wrists, which ain't exactly right either.

Thanks for this video. I've started doing the waggle and like it, and understand why it is useful - it helps me picture the take-away and the appropriate amount of right wrist bend, as well as relaxing me in preparation for the shot to be made.
