New Cleveland Driver & Driver Loft

Has anyone tried the new Cleveland Driver? Did you like it? What are your thoughts?

I notice 3 things about the club that I find somewhat unique:

1 - The standard loft options are lower than for most clubs. Not sure if loft is standard, or subjective between clubs and brands.

2 - The face is taller than most clubs, but maybe not as wide

3 - It is totally retro cool, and I want it.

Never hit it, but I love it.

Really neat lookin...right down to the headcover.

A nice change, to me. Looks like persimmon!

I work with Cleveland and have the Classic 290 head. It's a very low spin head so people need more loft than they usually think. Also, the club is the deepest face driver out there right now. As far as looks, you either like it or don't.

Link: Cleveland Golf - CLASSIC 270 DRIVER

They offer 3 models with fixed weights of 270, 290 and 310 grams. Head volumes also vary.

As usual, these are typical Cleveland deep-faced drivers which creates a shorter heel-to-toe span. This keeps the driver head CofM(ass) closer to the shaft tip, which reduces the stress on the shaft tip from centrifugal torque that causes shaft tip droop.

With such a deep face, clubhead path impact position becomes crucial. I would think you would need 3" tees to reach the driver head "sweet spot" and with an ascending AofA...

I would also think you would want to tee the ball well forward in your stance to use the Cleveland Classic drivers... which in turn would create a D-plane conundrum ... and you would really have to aim right a lot to hit straight ...!!!!

Yes.. to get more loft with a regular sized driver, you should hit a tad higher than the geometric center of the face where you can use the clubface roll... and take advantage of "vertical gear effect". Since you can't hit higher on the deep-faced Classics, Cleveland had to increase overall face lofts. Great engineering solution ... eh?!

Also, the driver head CofM(ass) must be somewhat higher, which is conducive to a lower spin rate... and together with the higher face lofts you have a rationalized driver head design...!!!!

Nice colors though ....

This has been my experience as well. It likes room to run.

And then off to work on his erectile dysfunction.

From the Cleveland Golf product literature which reeks with Freudian symbolism and linguistics:

PRODUCT OVERVIEW : CLASSIC 270 DRIVER

Cleveland Golf introduces the most advanced combination of style and performance in a titanium driver: The Classic 270. With a unique sole design and color scheme inspired by persimmon drivers, the Classic 270 has a pear-shaped profile with the largest, deepest club face ever produced by Cleveland Golf. The face promotes a hot, penetrating ball flight, while MaxCOR2 technology provides maximum distance on off-center hits. The Classic 270 is engineered with Ultralite technology, helping players generate increased head speed and distance with the same swing effort. It’s also part of the RightWeight Fitting System – with an overall weight of 270 grams, the Classic 270 is ideal for players seeking maximum head speed and distance.

.... not to mention the glans color of the driver head .... ;)
