New Driver Dilemma

One of the hackiest of hackers reporting here.

I'm thinking of buying a new driver for this season but can't figure out which way to go. Buy a maximum game improvement driver and strike the ball better with my current evolving swing or work on my swing to strike the ball better with a 'regular' driver?

I currently have a G10 Draw (10.5) and plan on sticking with Ping. I was at a local golf superstore and tried out both the G20 and K15 in the 'swing booth' and had better results with the K15 (straighter and a bit longer).

So, any suggestions on which way to go? As I said, my swing is 'evolving' (for the better I hope as I try to modify my swing based on all the new info I've garnered here and at MJ's forum) so does it make more sense to get a regular (non-draw bias) driver and try to improve my swing using that or get a draw bias driver (e.g. K15) and use that instead while still trying to improve my swing? It's like a variation of the chicken and egg conundrum.

Suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

I sold golf equipment for over ten years and there is an old sang, "you can't buy a golf game". The biggest problem with mid to high handicappers is they make different swing mistakes each swing and don't really have a grooved swing from one day to the next. On the other hand if you do have a grooved swing albeit not a good swing you can optimise your equipment to suit the swing you have. It all comes down to what you plan on doing with your swing, if you are trying to make swing changes I would hold off on the new driver until you get where your going, unless you have the money to burn which some guys do, then get one that fits you now and buy a new one later when you get to where your going with your swing. My only advise to mid to high 'cappers is don't buy on the first day go back a week later and hit again to see if the same driver is best.

I had an open face problem when I first started and thought the Nike STR8-Fit would help. Nope. It's a crutch. Got a G15 and worked it out myself. A little disappointed on the feedback side of things, but I still hit most fairways no problem. If I hit a closed face driver now it just shoots to the moon. If you're willing to accept you might struggle, but you are going to put in the work to fix the ball flight, I'd go for the square faced drivers. Draw bias drivers in my mind are for people who would rather go play their swing than work on making impact a little better. Like an attempt to buy a few strokes.

Adjustable drivers helps a lot in your situation.

I second that. I am a mid handicapper as well and my swing has been in constant flux. When I got my current driver fitted (a TM r9 supertri) I had it set to closed clubface with the weights on draw settings as I used to slice the ball. Now since I have been working on the new release and the out-toss my swing is coming in more from the inside. I have now changed the clubface to open with a neutral weight setting.

And if you really want to you could exchange the shaft as well without having to buy a new driver head.
