New Driver

Hi Brian

Really enjoy watching your you tube videos. :)

I am considering updating my 2005 Taylormade R5 draw driver 12.5 deg loft, seniors shaft.

I'm hitting the ball reasonably straight these days, which is great.

The distance I hit with my current driver is around 190 to 200 metres, which is approx 210 yards to 215 yards.

My flexibility is restricted by having a bad left hip...the cartilage in that joint is wearing out.....

I'm 52 and 5'7" tall, weigh about 160 pounds.

I am considering buying either the Taylormade Draw Burner or the King Cobra 2008 Speed LD Driver. With 10.5 deg loft and regular flex shaft.

Which club do you think I should buy?

They are a lot more forgiving and tend to launch a lot higher than stated loft which will help a slower shorter hitter like barbben

So, is cobra a good driver for all? or just those shorter hitters? because Im in the market for a new driver, my G2 is getting old and worn... and I was thinking about the new Callaway Hyper X driver...

Just get fit, that's the #1 thing. Anyone can play any driver made, as long as it's fit for loft, face angle, and the proper shaft

Then tell me this, because I have never been fit for a driver. Where to go... who to see... I mean, if I go to a GolfSmith, or an Edwin Watts, are they going to be able to fit me properly? Or do I need to go see someone who really knows their stuff, and its going to cost me a fortune...

help!

Golfsmith, edwin watts, and those types of places probably won't give you a really good fit. They will fit you on some kind of in door monitor and those are notoriously inaccurate and i know plenty of people who swing different indoors vs outdoors (me included).

However with you being a lefty, your ability to demo and get fit will probably be limited. I'd call around and try and find a place that will fit you outdoors on a launch monitor such as a vector, zelocity, or trackman. Usually the fittings are a bit over a hundo or so but sometimes they will apply that to the purchase if you buy something from them.

Ok, thanks Jim... Ill check around online and see if there are any places around here that can do that for me. sounds like I need to save some money!

Since we are talking about this, and sorry for jacking this guys thread, but, is the driver the most important club to get fit in the bag? I play right now, with nothing that has been fitted for me... now I have a couple of things going for me, Im average hight, at 5'9" almost 5'10" so any clubs I pick up, look pretty good to me, and, Im a pretty good player, so I can make those clubs work for me, however I know I would be so much better and accurate if I had clubs fitted for me... I just dont have the money to go out and do this, I would be willing to do it for driver though, because it seems that is the most important club to get fitted, seeing as how its so fickle of a club to hit.

Thanks again Jim for answering all my questions.:)

Putter #1
Irons #2
Woods #3

that's my opinion.

So, where is a good place to get the putter fitted, and im guessing the place to get your irons fitted would be the same as your driver? find a place with an outdoor launch monitor, or is it different with the irons?

by the way, Im playing Cleveland TA5 irons right now, I have been playing them for about... 4 years? anyway, I never had them fitted for me, but they have regular flexed true temper sensicore shafts... are these good shafts? I know I need a more stiff shaft, but like I said, I never got them fitted, my dad got them as a graduation gift for me when I was 17... they took me from a 20 'capper to the 7 I am now though.:D

Im also using a regular flexed shaft on my driver, with 10 degrees of loft... My swing speed is usualy around 109 mph.... Im guessing I should deffinatly be hitting a stiff shaft with less loft, I hit the ball HIGH!!! Usualy, I can hit my stiff shafted 3 wood, just as far as my driver, unless I really get ahold of the driver....

so what im asking is, am I really hurting myself with unfitted equipment? If so... do i REALLY need to get fitted ASAP? because if so... I need start saving.:(

The problem with the TA series is i don't know how easy it is to bend them for lie angle which is the most important thing.

Nothing wrong with 10* of loft, the key is launch angle and spin. Hitting it really high isn't a problem as long the ball isn't spinning too much.

Putting is hard to figure out, PROBABLY local golf galaxy could do that.

Thanks a bunch for answering all of my questions Jim, you have been a big help... Hopfuly I can get fitted soon, and by the right person. the nearest golf galaxy to me is 270 miles from me...:(

Thanks for the short precise answer Brian. The Cobra it is!

Here in Australia, the Cobra drivers are fairly pricey.
So now I'm on the hunt for a good deal.

Interesting to read all about getting the proper fit for a driver. I only play about twice a month, which isn't ideal......one day I'll get to play more often I hope.

I used Golfsmiths website to work out which Cobra to buy.

I ended up buying the King Cobra LD Speed F with 10.5 degress of loft standard shaft with regular flex.

Have only taking it to the range so far. It has a high trajectory for a 10.5 deg loft driver

It feels very good. Hit the occasional shot which started straight but then tailed off to the right......didn't hit any straight right...thank goodness....

Not sure whether I'm hitting it any further, as there was a bit of wind at the range.

Taking it to a course this coming week. That will be the real test. I think it may take a while to get used to it. I have been using the R5 for 3 years.
