News: Opinion on World Golf Championships

Greetings ...

Here's a golf news article by the AP's Doug Ferguson. It's his thoughts (and some players) on World Golf Championship (WGC) events.

Here's a couple of thoughts from yours truly ---

(1) Why do we need World Golf Championship events staged overseas when we already have the British Open, Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup and World Cup of Golf Team Championship ??

(2) Why are we always bringing elite fields of the world's best players (US and Non-US alike) to LaCosta, Firestone, Mount Joliet, Valderrama - but NOT to places like Phoenix, Sony-Hawaii, St. Jude-Memphis, John Deere-Quad Cities or even BC Open or Southern Farm Bureau ???

Something's definitely not right here!

1) Because the US tour is not open enough to overseas players, many of whom are better than the average US player and should be allowed to play here more.

2) Because if all events were equal, there would be more overseas and 'alternate tour' players than current PGA players on the tour

The PGA tour is a product sold to the public. Why not have the best product by ensuring the absolute best players in the world are playing here?

I would like to see 1 or 2 events a year where everyone must qualify, mini US open style, but pro only, no exemptions, and a big enough purse to get guys out to play. You would see just how deep the talent is out there.
