NON-GOLF THREAD: Poker

Does anyone play in real life / online?

My friend is getting me into it, and it's starting to get quite addictive!

Mixing odds calculations with the psychology of the game is really interesting and fun.

It's as addictive as golf, so be careful.

I'm a big hold em player. the on line sites have gotten better. Use to be quite a bit of collusion, but the web providers have gotten better at stopping it.

We actually have a weekly hold em tournament where I live and the pot keeps building and at the end of the year the earnings go to buy the winner a trip to Vegas to compete.

Good luck out there..

Hold Em

I play a little online for practice with play chips.(Hold em, Omaha Hi and Omaha8)

I generally play at a couple of casinos in my area.( 1/2 NL)

Oh, I also play in a 2/4 limit game Monday nights.(Hold em, Omaha Hi,Crazy Pineapple)

I was a winner at 2000NL, got my start by playing SNG's, built my bankroll from MTT's, and moved to cash games. I don't have much time to play anymore. When I do play, it's normally Heads up NL or LHE... Sometimes I like to find a table that's really shorthand with 2 or 3 players, and jump in. I'm an aggro action junky LAG, so shorthand/ hu's fits my personality/style better.

It is addictive! Are you playing NL or LHE, SNG's or MTT's?

Collusion mostly occurs in MTT's: players paying mules to make it through to a certain blind level before they hand over their account to a better player to finish the game.

Visit the 2+2 forums and read the instructional posts. Purchase pokertracker so that you can keep an accurate accounting of how much you win/lose, it also keeps stats on how you play, and how the players you play against play. Example- it can tell you how aggressive or passive you are from every position at the table, how often you fold, how often you open a raise, how often you call a raise. It can also help you avoid the good players, and realize who the bad players are. It's a must have, and it will help you improve your game. You can demo it for free. Also look into joining a training site like cardrunners, stoxpoker, and deuces cracked. There are other training sites that specifically focus on MTT's and SNG's.

Remember cash games are where the sharks prey on the fishies!!! MTT's / SNG are an easier place to start, and build a bankroll. I honestly recommend starting small and building up, not just depositing a lot of money, and playing with the big dogs. Why pay them to learn?

Have fun.

No patience....can't sit through it.

I've always found it appealing...the psychology and strategy etc...it is very interesting.

But I'm with you Martin...all I know is I get bored sitting there too long. Some guys play for hours...!

I tend to start getting too aggressive when I am sick of playing.

I understand!

That's why I like to play 3 handed (3 man) so that I can pound on the button, and take advantage of the other 2 players when they play too passively.

Heads up (hu) can be fun just for the action, but HU can be a real bore playing no limit. I prefer HU LHE... raise like 90% + from the button. The action goes pound pound pound. actually like shorthand 4 or less LHE more than No Limit. I wish that more players would start playing lhe.
