I played a game with an old buddy of mine.

He OBed one time and didn't hit a provisional. He dropped on the fairway.

Now is that considered his 3rd shot or 4th?

thanks

Neither. Everything after that point is basically made up because the rule was not applied correctly. I he assumed he would have hit his next tee shot to that point then he would be playing his fourth shot at that point. The third shot should have come from the tee.

I play that as a stroke and distance penalty; so it would be laying (lying?) 3, hitting 4.

Give me the play-by-play....
Par 4

Tee shot

Went to fairway, didn't find the ball.

Couldn't go back to hit the provisional because there were people behind us waiting already.

Dropped the ball to the nearest spot where he thinks the ball might have went out.

Got on to the green from the dropped area in 1. Two putted.

Scored 5 (+1) for this hole

2 stroke penalty?

that's what i thought....

an ob par without provisional is 2 stroke penalty

I mean it's really hard since there aren't people on the fairway watching you play golf and see where you ball landed. If you have a blind tee shot, you would not know if the ball stay in bound or not. You can only go to the fairway to see if the ball is there or not. If it's not there, you won't be able to go back and hit a provisional.

Now, this is not some tournament, but just games we play from time to time.

Its disqualification. As soon as you tee off on the next hole you are done in stroke play and loss of hole in match.

He's a terrible person and a cheat. It's probably indicative of how he lives his life away from the course. In fact, it's an indictment of your entire generation. Bollocks!!!!

Actually, he's laying 4 after the drop. Hope you at least won the hole:)

You use the word "bollocks" in Pennsylvania?
Now all I need is Dariusz calling me a wanker and I'll be tickled pink...;)

If recreational golfer played by the rules, the courses would get locked up forever and nobody would finish a round of golf ... all because of that ludicrous stroke and distance rule off the tee. The rules are only intended for those who don't slice or hook into the bushes... and that's ~0.5% of all golfers.

It's a one stroke penalty if the ball is played from the previous spot, but since the shot was not played from there and dropped, that results in a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play. So, 1 ob, 2 drop + 2 stroke penalty(for breach of the rule)= laying 4. Is that correct?

Is that how they would play it in a tour event? How do you explain hitting four? You can't drop a ball where you think a ball is lost or out of
bounds.

I'm taking into account he's playing a friendly game. I know you can't take a drop for OB. His buddy only took one shot and he should've taken 2 given the circumstances. I was just kidding.

Stroke and distance if it was OB then of course from the tee box he would have had to hit another...... If it was a lost ball and you guys could surely say that it went out in the hazard red stakes or yellow stakes then that rule applies.... Lost ball stroke and distance.... Or if you two said to save on pace of play off the first tee OB stakes to the left or right we will play them as red stake and use that rule then that’s fine too ... modified rules you see...

If it was a real club event and the modified local rules stated one thing then follow that rule....

Is your buddy a higher handicapped golf that’s trying to learn how to hit the ball and build some confidence then allow him to play without all the rule restrictions; but just let him know what the real rules are and if he was getting in a tournament or and club event than he may need to read the basic rules and maybe take a rule test… On that hole he could have played two balls on that hole and asked the club pro for a ruling when you guys got in and the loser buys the Pepsi's ... HAVE FUN don’t get to worked up. I

’m not saying don’t play by the rules it’s you guys call just understand if you get in a official match or tournament there is a ruling that would have taken place and before he signs his card ask the question and adjust accordingly… Most of all have fun!!!
