Greetings ...
When the PGA Tour gets to October, the available spots for full-field events drops from 144 to 132, and Monday Open Qualifying is not conducted.
This of course occurs at a time when players are trying to secure Top 125 status (full exemption for 2005) or Top 150 status (conditional exemption for 2005, but with unlimited sponsor invitation priviledges and a guaranteed spot in the Finals of the 2004 Q-School).
Bill Haas (Jay's son) is among those on the outside looking in. Bill was trying his best to reach Special Temporary Member status, which would give him unlimited Sponsor Invitation priviledges for the rest of 2004, as well as a guaranteed spot in the Final Stage of the 2004 Q-School.
Unfortunately, Haas fell short of this goal. He's used up the non-member's allotment of seven sponsor invitations and, thanks to the PGA Tour's October Field-Size Rules, can't even Monday Qualify his way into events.
The PGA Tour's October Rules have dashed PGA Tour wanna-be's hopes in another way. This week's Southern Farm Bureau Classic is played opposite the WGC-American Express Championship. About 40 full-time PGA Tour players (all those actually playing plus withdrawals IE Mickelson, Singh) are in the American Express field.
And since those 40-odd players are not in the SFB Classic field, this is a great chance for the PGA Tour wanna-be's to improve their chances of playing in 2005. Unfortunately for many of the prospective players out there, the PGA Tour didn't take this unique situation into account.
At the very least, the PGA Tour could amend the rules and allow for six to eight (rather than the standard four) players to Monday Qualify into the SFB Classic, and maybe even allow the SFB Classic sponsors to invite two to four extra players (normal sponsor invite maximum is eight).
Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport
