I am confused about wrist functions.....

Namely I am to understand so far that there are three types of hinging. I am also led to believe it is not an up or down concept like the usual teachings of the idiots such as leadbetter preaches... is this correct ?

So the three types

Horizontal
Angled
Vertical

Now what I am asking is what they are and how to achieve them in the swing or even a chip.

If I understand the TGM view correctly, horizontal hinging is not a 'wrist' motion, but a 'forearm' one (the roll of the upper vs lower forearm bone, in relation to the shoulder) - basically, think of 'clapping your hands' onto the plane, and horizontal hinging is what you would do to 'keep the palms on plane' as much as possible

Angled hinge IS a wrist motion - the bending/arching of the wrist - the 'upper cut punch' - but 'on plane' (or at least, some point between verticle and horizontal)

and verticle is both a wrist motion AND a shoulder/forearm motion (where the shoulder/forearm motion is the opposite direction as the horizontal, clockwise, vs counter clockwise roll)

Brian, do I have this right?

IF you go to the chuckevansgolf.com forum and look under the The Golfing Machine, the Hinge Action-A Primer, Yoda gives a very detailed explanation.

Hinging, in regards to TGM, is simply the clubface motion/rotation through impact.

In the both arms straight position post-impact, the toe points at the target for horizontal hinging (see pic). For angled hinging, the clubface will be at about a right angle to the plane board. Vertical hinging will keep the clubface looking at the target.

Angled hinging FEELS like no roll (the pivot will take care of it). Horizontal feels like added roll. And Vertical feels like reverse roll. Generally.

Horizontal hinging, theoretically, will produce greater distances because the clubhead will be moving more in relation to the hands.

Since we can't see your pic yet, look at your clubface at follow through, compare its relationship to the plane, is it about parallel (horizonital),about 45 degrees to it(angled), or 90 degrees to it(verticle).
The face from impact to follow through can either close (horz), layback (vert), or close and layback (angled).

So I suppose the next question is - should I change from angled to horizontal or angled....

according to yoda's overly prolonged thread which could of been abrieviated into a few pictures and about 3 paragraphs - I believe he was stating that in a horizontal hinge - the clubface opens and closes through this motion and with the vertical hinge the clubface basically will either be more hooded or face the sky more and the angled incorporates both these motions in either direction.

So basically the clubface with a horizontal hinge will be more consistant on trajectory and thus also distance yet direction will be the thing that could suffer and vertical hinge the direction won't deviate much but the trajectory might be slightly more erratic is this correct ?

I'm sure others will chime in but i would say your hinge would be dependant on your procedure, hitting or swinging.
This what what Brian explained to me and showed me how to do correctly.
I thought i was a hitter, what I actually did was mix, but my tendancy was swing, but i drove hard with the rear side causing an angled hinge. (actually at times it was close to verticle).
Brian reconized the problem right away and has changed me to horizontal hinge ( it's a work in progress).

Ok saw the pic, its hard for me to see from that angle but your added lines are a good explanation...you have the understanding. What did the ball do on that shot? Angled hinge tends to lead to a fade (depending on ball position).

Perfectly straight block 15 yards of target - good trajectory even though the sound at impact wasn't perfect.... my shot pattern tends to fire right when I don't hit my target - which happens more often that I wished...lol.... my trajectory is also quite erratic which is getting better as I don't have as much throwaway at impact but working on it...

Is angled hinging the worst variation of these 3 because it adds the downwards effect of the two other hinging patterns in one ?

No worse, all useful. Angle is the most widley used of the three. Vertical is used more with wedge shots for a short game. Horizontal might be the most difficult to control, used by long smooth fluid swingers, 3 and 4 barrel junkies that look so good off the tee. Matt, learn and enjoy them all for the best golf of your life.

Knowing how to use good hinge action is like being a master of a control pad to a video game.

6B is right, it's not worse, its all needed. Its just the procedures your mixing.
Mathew my ball flight was like your describing, and once Brian had me start working on Horizontal hinge (because of being a swinger)my good shots are the best they have ever been, and my misses arent near as bad as before.
