On Plane setup

Didn't want to threadjack Wanole's swing thread anymore :)

This great pic from Brian is the source for all my knowledge on plane's (widely read I am not [:I])

Mathew thanks for the reply. If I read correctly, if Im after zero shift, the best setup is to have the shaft/right forearm on the turned shoulder plane.

Looking at this, I cant see how someone could do that without having two straight arms. If I wanted a zero shift swing, would I need to setup with straight arms? [:0]

I'm not going for a zero shift swing, where on this pic might you expect me to setup the shaft/right forearm?

thanks

Draw a line from the hands (butt of club) through the point where the red line is on the back and move your hands back and through on that plane.

That is zero shift.

Plane isn't about the club it is about the HANDS, the 'arm plane' would be a close proxy - imagine your elbows on TOP of a plane board at address.

The plane that PP1 travels back and through.

There is also the foot plane, knee plane, hip plane, eye plane and air plane too.

Before you get yourself all boxed in with these static planes, you should understand that planes are only a diagnostic tool used by an observing instructor to evaluate the students golfswing.

When you are executing the golfswing, you have absolutely no way to determine where these planes are located in respect to your body or swing ... absolutely none !!!!

However you can somewhat sense your handpath from the start of the Backswing because you get some feedback from what you may be doing at the lower speeds. Anybody who claims to be Off Plane in their swing is only guessing and probably guessing badly.

If you want to determine if your golfswing is in accordance with TGM strictures you must seek the help of an AI like Brian, who has both the GSED and PGA designations. He can make an unbiased evaluation of your swing and provide you with the true facts. Subjective guessing while performing a golfswing is worth squat, and anybody here telling us what they think they feel is happening to them is just blowing smoke up their *** ... !!!!!

The PLANE is the shaft.

& THE HANDS are on the shaft.

If you look at the path of PP1 throughout the swing, similar to the right elbow, IT stays on ITS plane.

Think of it as a very 'thick' plane ;)

The butt of the club defines one 'edge' and the sweetspot the other. The butt of the club stays on its plane. The sweetspot however, moves TO that plane at the top. There should be no 'shift' in the plane of the butt of the club/PP1's plane - just like the right elbow.

Draw a line exending the arms line downward to the ground, you have a 'plane line' that is inside the 'ball target line', parallel to it.

The PP1 plane. It is inside, and parallel to the target line.

I like to consider this the 'hand plane', which in my view is NOT the same as the 'hands only' plane in the pic or TGM.

The hands, the hands the hands.

The club knows what the hands tell it. There is very good reason that the "mind is in the hands"
