One More Last Chance

Just booked two hours with 'da man himself on May 7th. I'm excited, but honestly, this is my last ditch effort. At some point, a man just has to admit that maybe bowling, darts or needlepoint is the hobby for him.

I've played most of my life, but only really start taking lessons from local guys and practicing routinely about 15 months ago. Managed to shoot a few rounds in the 90's at easier courses this year, but was routinely in the 105-110 range. Very frustrating as I spend a lot of time practicing and studying while many of my playing partners warm up with a couple swings on the practice tee and get around in the 80's.

I'm attaching a couple videos from earlier this week to document the current status of my "move". I'm resting the clubs until I head to New Orleans, but I thought you all might enjoy seeing this and then the progress that I'm very hopeful will come after the lesson with Brian. Apologies if I have done something obnoxious trying to insert them in the post.

Many thanks to all the knowledgeable and entertaining posters who I've learned much from over the past few months. Hopefully, good things are on the way...if not, maybe I'll see some of you at learntocrochet dot com.

IMO your pivot needs tons o' work. Backswing looks ok, maybe a touch too much left lean for you right now, but the downswing right shoulder is WAY over plane. You need some right side bend action/practice in the transition, so you can attack the ball from inside. NSA may help you.

He's shoulder is way over plane on the downswing is because of the way his back swing is...

High right shoulder is from his club face being super open in the down swing. A mechanism to square it up. I've been there. NSA lesson coming up. You have some good stuff to work with, though. 80's is very possible with some work. I predict you will be excited to practice and play after a few minutes with Brian.

you know what buddy - that swing may have some faults as pointed out above but its a lot better than 80% of swings at my club!It does not look like the swing of a 100 shooter. Lovely takeaway.

I have to feel if you are not breaking 100, your short game may be the best area to work on. At my club one of the biggest differences between me (UK 3 hcap) and the average player is that from 60 yards and in i will, even on my worst shots hit the green and most times have a putt for an up and down. They are just as likely to duff it, skull it, 3 putt it etc. That is the area where most players will see the biggest improvement in the fastest time imo.

Regardless - good luck with lesson and let us know how it goes

Ever tried a lagging clubhead takeaway (LCT)?

The different parts of your swing (shoulders, hips, arms, hands) are not firing in the right order to generate power.

LCT will help you feel a more dynamic motion.

Another thought that may be beneficial to you is of 'leaving your hands at the top' as your hips and body start the downswing.

Contest: best fix by below average M forum member?!

I believe 74% of us nonteaching/hack members including me would first say fix the face in the DS (active rotation around shaft axis) + more active pivot with towel drill or TDO move (which would lower the trail shoulder in the DS) ?

First prize is...?

I have a question about LCT.
When I start step on the right foot my club seems to have a forward press. Am i moving my body too much?

Come on man, give me some order!

First move down needs to be a lateral bump to the target of the left hip and not just rotating left with the hips and shoulders.

When you "bump" the left hip I want you to feel your upper body "tilt" ever so slightly back and behind the ball. (Axis Tilt)

Feel the shoulders just wait a little longer before they get involved. Kinda the idea of your left shoulder being stuck under your chin while you "bump" that left hip to the target.

Once you do the bump (hip), jump (weight transfer to left ) and hold (the left shoulder from rotating too soon) LET"R RIP.

The peices of your swing are good just the order of how you fire them is off.

Don't start filling your head with stuff now that you have scheduled your lesson. Brian will get you on the right track quickly. I see some good stuff in your swing and some bad stuff but since you are going to the Jedi master wait to get his input.
JMHO,
Ric

Thanks to everyone for the interest. I can tell you I am trying like all hades to start with a bump to the left on the way down, twistaway, and come from the inside. Obviously not getting it done, eh? I appreciate Ric's comment, and that is the exact plan. Going to try and "clear the mechanism" by laying off for a couple weeks so that I'm not working on a bunch of crossed-up swing thoughts when I get to Brian.

NWB, I also appreciated your comment about the short game. I am actually decent with my wedges (comparatively) and averaged about 30 putts per round last year (somewhat misleading as I averaged about 2 GIRs...). Obviously I could be much better there, but my theory has been that once I am in a position to start trying to get up and down for par...or even bogey...I will start working much harder on my short game. Since I am routinely OB, one fairway over, in a hazard, or on the embarrassing side of the reds off of the tee, I'm normally looking to get up and down for double, triple, etc. That's why I've been focusing on the short game thus far.

That's not so bad, it surely doesn't look like the swing of a 30 handicap...If I was a betting man I think the first thing Brian is to going change is your backswing, an early hip turn is going to be the first thing.

You're getting it done on the back swing, but not on the downswing. I agree with the others, you can score much better with the move you have. I'll stop there. Brian will help you a million times more than I.

Brian is going to have fun with you. Big, strong guy with some athleticism, and a swing that is not really that far off.

What I see is a huge amount of tension. Your left arm is locked solid, and I'm betting your right hand is squeezing. This tension then gets amped up on the course, and you start to steer the shots even more than on the practice tee.

You must promise to post up some post-lesson videos.

You will be amazed at how Brian coaches you using easily understood
verbage.

Good luck,

Thanks again guys. I get the ol' "your swing looks pretty good to me..." bit all the time. Sure wish the ball thought the same thing.

To Aaron concerning thinking on the course and Steve concerning tension, the answer is absolutely. I'm an accountant by training and letting go is not in my nature. Also, years and years of seeing high, right ball flights hasn't helped much with relaxing and just playing golf.

Will post post-lesson video either way, but here's hoping you guys are right and it looks much better than now...actually, I don't care how it looks, just hope it WORKS better than now.

Just out of curiosity, anyone else on the board that has worked from a 20+ handicap down to single digits? I don't seem to ever hear too many success stories of that type.

Well you will have to find a way not to think during swings, because it makes things worse. Take something that you are no doubt good at such as walking accross the room- you wouldn't be thinking where to put your foot and how to move your arms, you just do it without thinking. Save technical thoughts for the driving range, just focus on the target on the course. This isnt easy to do by any stretch of the imagination i struggle with it too.
