Padraig Harrington.

Ok.

He is a world-class player, with a good golf swing, and he was due.

Sergio?

The "world's best ball-striker" hit it very well, and for the most part, putted halfway decent. He'll win a major one day, and then he'll win a couple of more. But he will never dominate. Doesn't have the disposition for it.

Tiger?

Simple. He is trying to make a golf swing that is next to maxed out. He is only so-so at it, and he has hit a million balls with it.

Hey Tiger, guess what? Nicklaus, Trevino, and Hogan eliminated the left side of the course. Snead the right. Casper did both, but separately.

Here is my elvauation of your patterns:

You used to have a fairly strong left hand grip, took it inside, had a more closed face at the top and hit a hard draw. You were a double-shifter, and you had a late random release (1997 Masters).

Butch came along, fiddled around for a while and settled on telling you to get wide and outside on the takeaway, with a short arm swing and a full shoulder turn. You had a slightly stronger than neatral grip, at least 10 degrees weaker than the old one. He told you to make a single-plane downswing, and swing more in front of you. What you wound up doing when you played your best was a reserve-shift plane angle variation, with a random release and a pretty darn straight lane line (2000 US Open). You went bad when you started adding too much right arm and going toward zero shift.

Now you are Haneyfied. Or is it Haneyfried?

Anyhoo, your grip is very neutral, you backswing very round, you change of direction is warped—literally, which gets you below plane and below the sweetspot, and you swing too far to the right and you try to gather up the marbles, even on a draw!

Dude, that ain't going to work.

Here is what I would do. I figure it would take us about two hours tops.

1. Slightly stronger left hand grip, about where it was with Butch.

2. More inside takeaway, especially your hands. This will help us at the top.

3. Completely eradicate the laid-off business, and no more left wrist arching!

4. Allow your NORMAL change of directions, and natural shoft to the elbow plane.

5. Teach you to draw a straight plane line. You got close with Butch, but he didn't allow it, or think it was possible with a double-shift. I know better.

6. Stop this "gather up the marbles" crap. (For those of you who have no idea what the heck that is, it is the FORCED turning of his right plam toward his face near the finish)

7. Have the shaft of the club finish more like in 1997, pointing more toward the ball. Like Nicklaus.

8. Show you how to adjust it all for draws and fades, and teach you something you really need—and "out shot." A driver that will NEVER TURN LEFT AND NEVER EVER miss the fairway right. It would be like cheating.

After you win 10 more majors in 3 and half years, we both can retire.

Brian, I'm just curious here but have you ever emailed him or posted on his website? I'd be just be curious to see his reaction on your great thoughts.

I don't solicit players. Never have and never will.

But, LOTS of "top" teachers read this site, and if they use this on Tiger, that's great.

Just a little credit for the Dago, ok?

I really hope you get to work with Tiger. Really. I'm that confident in your abilities and am the biggest Tiger fan out there.

Herein lies the rub.

Why would Phil think Butch is the answer? Why won't Tiger leave Haney right now?

I know why.

WHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD THEY GO??

The guys who might be able to help, are totally unknown to them.

Brian, totally agree with you. What the players need to realize is yes, that teacher provides a good mental safety-blanket, but you also need to do what's best in order to win. Tiger's so focused on a theoretically perfect swing that it's standing in the way of him winning.

I heard that Tiger made his swing changes because he didn't like how his old swings looked. How it looked, not how it performed.

Hi Brian,

What is an "out shot"? Is it easy to learn? I do not need to hit it as far as Tiger but I really need a driver shot that doesn't go left and doesn't miss the fairway right.

cheers,

daniel

Tiger is what he is, no question but compared to Ernie, Donald, Sergio etc his swing is just ugly looking -- all brute force and no elegance

An out shot is a go-to shot when you have to get the ball in play--i.e. Tiger's stinger when he was with Butch.

Ever thought of getting a publicist or an agent?

I could see you writing an after the majors straight-talk essay for one of the golf rags.

I heard that Tiger made his swing changes because he didn't like how his old swings looked. How it looked, not how it performed.

I remember he said in his book that he changed it after winning the Masters because he did not like the way it looked when he watched it after the tournament.

That is something I never understood. Why would anybody decided to change their swing after winning one of the most sought after Majors ?

'If it's not broken, then don't fix it.' Well now he needs some fixin' and Brian Manzella is one of the few who know what Tiger needs.

Too much style emphasis for Tiger ... his dynamics were incredible!

Like in Bobby Clampetts book - appreciate your dynamics rather than the pretty bits!

I feel that most of the comments on Tigers swing changes not being correct may be right but I also believe some of you do not understand what makes Tiger what he is. His drive to get better and better requires hime to make changes right or wrong. A true winner in life is one who takes those risks. When you do this sometimes you will stumble along the way. Add lifes pressures like his Fathers death and his new child becoming distractions to his strong work ethic and the high expectations people have he won't always deliver. He does not make any excuses for his recent play like Sergio will do. Expect him to improve. He is leader in the Fedex points and this thread sounds like he stinks. I will guarantee you if you ask any of the pros today in any tournament who they would be most afraid of it would be Tiger.

Brian could never fix Tiger because Tiger would want to the coach to fit what he wants to do. He is in charge and has the money and credentials to back that up. In the Business world generally 2 people with strong egos like Brian and Tiger have will clash. In their cases both Brian and Tiger are good because of what they do and both deserve respect.

When Tiger gets more tournament play rather than staying at home watch out!!

Tiger made his swing changes for three reasons. First, he wanted a bit more distance, and felt that his Butch pattern was tapped out in that regard. Second, he felt he had trouble self diagnosing his swing with the Harmon approach. Thus all his comments about wanting to "own" his swing. Third, and most important, he felt he needed action with less stress on his knee following his injury in 2002. Query whether (a) his new action involves that much less stress on his left knee and (b) the new knee injury shows that didn't pan out too well.
Tiger is the best golfer in the world, and it isn't even close. That said, it doesn't mean he has the best swing, and it certainly doesn't mean that he doesn't have room for improvement.
