optical illusion

I am always puzzled that the angle between the left arm and clubshaft can be an acute angle and would think this is an optical illusion.

If one were to hold a book in front at eye level, and imagine you are looking at a golfer face on; the bottom horizontal edge is the left arm and the left edge is the clubshaft. Now tilt the book away from you about the bottom edge (left arm) such that the left edge (clubshaft) is on a swingplane of 45deg. The angle between the left arm and shaft is still 90deg, OK. Now rotate the book about the bottom right corner (left shoulder) horizontally say 30deg. The angle between left arm and clubshaft now appears acute to your eyes...optical illusion.

Very true. But that doesn't mean that some guys can't achieve a REAL acute angle between their left arm and clubshaft (like Sergio).

The most I can get is 90deg. And yet from a face on view when I flatten my downswing and left arm is horizontal, the angle appears 60 deg. No way I can have such a huge wristcock. Illusion.

Illusion?

You might not be able to get much more than 60°, but I have pretty inflexible wrist for a drummer, and I can get 90°+.

However, no matter WHO you are, if you also BEND your left wrist, you can get WAY more left wrist-to-clubshaft angle. :D

If you are measuring the angle between the clubshaft and your left arm from a face-on view, then do you mean you can get 90° or less angle?

It's amazing how much more wristcock you can get with a little bit of left wrist bend. But a lot of people overestimate the amount of bend actually needed to produce this extra wristcock effect. When done properly, the left wrist should look almost flat.

I thought bending the left wrist is a big no no?

brian is referring to the top of the swing and during the first half of the downswing. He is not referring to impact.

Yes I did understand it was during downswing. However the leftarm flying wedge would be destroyed/misaligned?

Sergio is an illusion. His downswing get's on the elbow plane faster than 99% of the players out there. From the front view, that looks pretty acute, as we are looking at it from an angle.

Of course, Brian's point about bending the left wrist adds the angle too.
