Overlap vs interlock

Brian and other forum members,

There have been a few threads over the last few years that have dealt with these two grip types. I was wondering if someone could give me the merits of one grip over the other and any experiences anyone has had switching from one type to the other. Thanks in advance.

I've switched from interlock to Vardon because of my tendency to interlock too deeply, causing my right hand grip to be in a too strong position. Have some issues with overlapping as well, mainly due to my relatively small hands and short fingers. Surprisingly, I've found a double overlap a very comfortable grip, but I try to avoid it since I believe it's not a perfect option.

Cheers

I started with the interlock grip because we had two golf books in my house: practical golf by John Jacobs and Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus.

I changed my grip to the Vardon 3 years ago. The interlock feels flimsy to me.

Interlock allows your left hand to be softer on the grip, due to the action of muscles in the back of the hand...

When I first started golfing my father taught me the game he showed me vardon's so thats were I started. Got away from golf during a good part of my childhood and played a lot of baseball and dislocated many of the fingers on my right hand. Especially playing softball in Chicago and anyone from Chicago knows you play with a 16" clincher softball, NO Glove.

When I finally did get back to golf because my hands are smallish I tried the interlock and the first time I swung a club with it I dislocated the pinky finger of my right hand where you interlock, after heavy doses of ibuprofin I returned to vardon never to look back. Smallish hands and all.

The Grip.

I covered all of this in NSA 2.0...

I like the over-"lock," but the inter-lock is the grip of NickLOSS, Tigger, and MichaelFinneyhe'ssoskinny, so it can't be all bad. :D

Big Don....

Brian, I don't get this 'NickLOSS' thing, a term you often use...?? Apologies for my slowness.

Our friend "Big" Don Villavaso, always pronouced Jack's surname as:

Nick-LOSS

Most folks say:

NICK-lis

For those who don't know who "Big Don" is....well, we have to do a video, but for now:

Donald is a 75 year-old golf teacher from New Orleans, who is an often-quoted, more often imitated (in the Rich Little sense), but never duplicated 350+ lb. 6'3" MOUNTAIN of a man, friend and advisor to myself and Tom Bartlett, Mike Finney and Chris Hamburger.

Since I always hook the ball, I don't have NSA. Can someone explain the reasons that Brian likes overlap vs interlock?

Only thing I remember him saying was overlap "requires less maintenance." But he also said over and over that either one is fine.

I'm mainly trying to use overlap now because I hurt my pinkie in interlock.

How?? If I left my nails and they grew to near-womanish length (now my hands look reeeeeaaaalllll niiiiiZZZEEE) I cut my left hand with my pinkie fingernail before (if I went gloveless AKA naked)......now I proudly don a callus and have no problems with such ill effects.
