One of the golfers I looked forward to watch on the weekend. Look at the extension on the takeaway...

Obviously, the images are not in sequence from front view

Why does his hips look so square half way into his DS?

I like his free hip turn.

That's where they should be for his swing...slide, then turn...:)

As for his big hip turn, he was an MA swinger, which allows a big backswing hip rotation. This is a swing for life. Look at the lack of stress on his lower back all the way through the swing.

....

I thought his teacher was Chuck Cook, GSED.

His teacher is not in dispute. That is an MA swing (as MA would have told you when he was alive)...

Comparisons at the top
Straightened/extended right leg
Big hip turn
Left heel up

Mike swung a tad faster that Payne (155 mph recorded), hence the more extreme right side compression on the downswing.
Take a look:

"right side compression"......I like that. Would that be along the same lines as using the ground for leverage?

Don't know if the ground works into it in that way, but look at the lack of "jump-up" before impact compared with say Tiger and the other big hitters of today, and it's more than likely the swing speed on that swing above is in excess of Tigers present best...

"Right side compression" is apparently the key to maximising your distance, and basically refers to compressing the muscles of your right-side lower back quickly from the top of your backswing.

Another description is to try and drive your lowest rib down onto the top of your right hipbone (the iliad crest).
This move solves a lot of problems. For a start it is impossible to come over the top as it drive the right shoulder down and under, rather than out and around...
It also has the effect of automatically transfering weight to the left side, without thinking about it...
Plus, it keeps your head behind the ball.
Plus it brings the club down from the top without any arm intervention, the right shoulder drops, the left shoulder raises and the club travels around with the arms...

Overall, a very good swing thought to have from the top IMO....

On-plane and beyond impact.

Stewart is perfectly on-plane from the top to the finish. Besides that, he also complys with the "LAW" of "swinging", which, in turn, performs for him happily and beautifully.

Austin's release is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...y beyond impact, along with his crazy swing speed.

What a ride for either!!
