Phil Blackmar on TGC

Anyone watch the Champions Tour Learning Center show on the TGC with Phil Blackmar? I may be incorrect, but I thought Phil stated that the reason why pros look like they are swinging in real smooth or in slow motion is that they use their arms more than their lower body. Higher handicap golfers tend to use more lower body and shoulders more.

Anyone else see this?

Thoughts?

The reason why better players look so smooth is because they have a rather efficient swing, meaning using less effort to create more speed by simply swinging on plane and not casting/flipping (for the most part).

Players who aren't as good look more "jerky" because of what i said above.

I completely agree that better players have a more effecient swing, but do you believe that more arms are being used compared to the lower body or it just appears that way?

I think Phil Blackmar has spent a lot of time listening to Jim Flick, with whom I would also disagree. The phrase "using the lower body" is also very vague. Was he any more specific is how an amateur uses their lower body more? I would tend to say the opposite. At least 90% of the amateurs that I have taught have not used their lower body enough, and in the right manner.

Just my 2 cents.

Actually the lower body imo is what SEPARATES the professionals from the amateurs. They know how to use theirs correctlys and most amatuers don't which is easily shown by:

lack of axis tilt through the ball
off plane right shoulder
and others

Famous Manzella Quote #245

"You ever see those pros like Freddie Couples, David Toms, & Ernie Els, that look like they are swinging easy?

That's cause they are.

Jack Nicklaus' 6-iron yardage—in his prime—was 165.

He once hit a very famous 6-iron 225 in the air."

Get it?

But Blackmar is just hyping up his boss—Jim Flick's silly notions of golf.

Swing the Clubhead and all that junk espoused by Flick, Toski, et.al. is something I just don't get.

Remember Flick in the picture where there are 2 shafts, 1 about mid thigh and 1 at about the knees. Flick's genius instruction........"to cure a slice hit the bottom shaft".......IOW...........FLIP IT......pure lunacy.......

What is swinging easy?

I can't do it.

I need juice on both the BS/DS to play half way decent.

It's what you "look like" compared to what "you feel."

People tell me i look extremely smooth, ie like couples or Els but maybe slightly more tempo (not much). BUT i can tell you that i am surely using a lot of effort to create it when i'm swinging fast. It just doesn't look that way to others because of efficiency, balance, being on plane, etc.

s-m.....me too buddy.

Now.....I like making sure I am loose. (particularly in the shoulders)

For me it is a very thin line between smooth and dainty though. (for me)

I start steering, getting sloppy, etc.

...

glcoach.....that one was a classic. Thank God for guys like Brian.
