PIVOT AND WEIGHT TRANSFER

I am having trouble transfering my weight to my front side, while keeping my head behind the ball. I have been using a drill where I place my stand bag a few feet in front of me, and then prop my 3 wood out toward me so that it is positioned a few inches left of my head. The club is supposed to be a visual aid that helps me keep my head behind the ball at impact. I try to pivot around my spine to the right-so my head moves a few inches, and then pivot back to the left and return my head to it's original position while "filling up the wall" with my body. Sometimes when I do this, I have trouble getting my weight over to my left side.

How can I keep my head back while at the same time pivoting forward and getting my weight to the left side? Any drills or advice?
Thanks
Jeff

2 simple steps:

1. Learn to pivot(there are drills in confessions that I would reccomend) When you begin to hit the ball left of left then move to step 2.

2. Learn to Tilt your teacup while pivoting (NSA and multiple threads on this site are helpful) You'll be hitting the ball straight and far.

Zarro-

I don't understand what you mean by "tilt your teacup." I'm not having a problem with direction-I've actually been hitting the ball very striaght. Sometimes I hit it very solid, but I am also hitting the ball fat when I don't transfer my weight correctly. I have downloaded confessions of a flipper, and have read many threads on the pivot. I guess I don't fully undertand how to pivot. Where does the weight go, and at what point in the downswing transition? How do I make sure I get all my weight to my front side, when I'm leaving my heavy head back? I guess I'm just puzzled by the concept and application.

I've chosen to play with a "conventional" swing. I experimented with "stack and tilt" from the article in GD, but it is such a different concept, with such limited info on it. Personally a lot of what seems to be taught in "stack/tilt" doesn't appear to take place in the actual real swing out on tour.

Default The Golfer's Pivot in 100 Words
Here is my attempt to explain how to perform a correct golf pivot in 100 words or less....

With your weight centered, use the left leg to help you push the weight OFF of that foot as you make a sharp turn of the right hip. FALL and SQUAT into your left leg. Using the ground, push UP off of that FOOT as your right hip moves TOWARD IT. Use this motion to get your left shoulder as FAR FROM THE BALL YOU CAN at impact. Keeping your hips left and your head back, let the motion of your arms PULL YOU to a FINISH with your right foot SPUN UP on the toe and your KNEES TOUCHING.

Pretty good, eh?

World's first stack and tilt golf swing - from the 50's

Pictures of Jerry Barber's shiftless golf swing. He managed to win the PGA with this swing and some phenomenal putting in the early 60's.

I guess you could call this Stack and Tilt to the extreme.

priceunderpar,

When you get to the top of your backswing, you weight is (diagonally backwards) towards your right heel yes?...

Simply perform one action...While the weight is on (towards) your right heel at the top, simply try and raise your right heel (while keeping your head behind the ball) ...You won't actually get the heel off the deck while the weight is on it, but trying to make it happen will naturally make your right hip and knee drive diagonally forward and your weight will shift to the left side..
Try it as a regular exercise without actually hitting balls...

Now that-appears to be a stack and tilt swing that actually mirrors what is taught in the GD instruction articles. That is very interesting-I had not seen that before.

puttmad-

I like that tip. I'll give the excercise a try...

I've been really frustrated with not being able to understand how I am supposed to pivot in the golf swing. I read a lot of articles, and have watched many videos on it. If Manzella was a tad closer to me, I think I'd go get a lesson about it. Been trying to justify a 10 hour drive out to see him in Baton Rouge.

puttmad's swing/feel/thought

I tried this in my living room & it feels really good. I can't wait to try it at the range and see what it looks like on my video cam.

Thanks!!

Hit wedges, 3/4 only, where the ball goes straight or a slight draw while keeping your right foot on the ground or ever so slightly roll to your instep. Only way to do that is to stay in your tilt.

Once you have that mastered, just allow the pivot to PULL YOU out of that position.

Great images - thanks! Never seen this swing before - great impact alignments!!

Price, if your swing momentum doesn't pull you to your desired "left" position in your follow through, you are doing some "adding" with the hands and have early throwaway.
