plane line tracing

Any suggestion on how to trace the plane line in the second part of the backswing? I have no problem when I take the club back, however it gets laid off when my hands go past my right hip. I know this relates to the recent laid off thread, but it is troubling to start the club on plane and lose it halfway back to the top. Any drills or thoughts that have been effective?

You have to keep #3pp BEHIND the shaft.

When you get to that position next time you are tracing, start rotating your left arm towards the plane and away from the plane. Notice where the laser points and at the same time where your right index finger is (#3pp).

The more laid off you get the more under you'll be and the more on plane or steep you are the more behind you'll be.

Use the lasers and you'll no what i'm talking about. The problem is that so many people don't realize how much "up" in the backswing you need. I really need to get off my lazy arse and do a video on a few things for everyone that i've been talking about forever lol

I'd really love to see a video on this...I am positive I don't get the swing "up' enough.

And excellent question Dodger btw. I think if I can "feel" where I need to be before start down that would be huge. I guess it's time to invest in a laser trainer.

You mention keeping the #3pp behind the shaft as preventing being laid off. As a swinger, shouldn't the #3pp be under the shaft at the top of the swing? If it is not, could I be laying the club off at the transition in order to get #3 pp under the shaft "late"? As a swinger, what happens if #3 pp is not under the shaft at the top of the backswing? thanks.

You are confused. #3pp doesn't get under, it ROTATES. However that #3pp is STILL behind the sweetspot. It just's now rotated.

For swinging PP3 should rotate to the top of the grip....I think. At the top of the backswing and after the follow through. Behind the shaft through impact. A clarification on this would be nice.

Jim...

proally been asked before but....without using flashlights, what are the best laser pointers to use?

...and...Do flashlights work?

I like the butch harmon laser trainer the best. comes with a wonderful mat (don't pay attention to the ball flight laws on it) which doubles as a nice putting matt, the lasers work well (however won't fit w/o modification on midsize grips or larger) and all in all just the best i've used. I don't think they make them anymore so you might have to find them on close out or ebay.

The thing about flashlights is that it isn't a golf club. I like the lasers to be ON the golf shaft. So that way your feedback from swinging the club with the lasers on it can turn into normal feedback on your swing. If you just use a laser or just a flashlight you don't have that club in your hands. Plus it's hard to adjust for plane angle too. At least when you put the lasers on different clubs you can setup properly for each.

HOWEVER

The danger with lasers (happened to me long ago) is learning to trace a straight plane line WITHOUT having an on plane right shoulder. So be careful.

But as far as if they work, yes they do. I think the reason why i tend to hit the ball so straight with little movement is because the plane is the boss and i work on it constantly, even at home. If you are on plane, even with poor clubface control you know where the ball is going most of the time. Once you add some clubface control in there you can basically do anything you want with the ball.
