Please help: Downswing problems (long)

Hi Brian,
I know you are busy but would really appreciate any insights as I am at my wits end.

I am a 5 hdcp, decent player but def. could be better. Have worked with the same instructer for awhile and and I know the points he is making are valid but having a hard time incorporating them into my swing. As I have seen on the video he has taken, I really have a lot of back and forward movement in my swing. I make a pretty good move back, but I end up a good ways from the ball and , here's where the trouble starts, to get back to the ball I have to really move forward and down to get back to it. We have been working on trying to eliminate some of this movement. One drill he has me do is drop my right foot back and put weight on right toes and hit balls. Obviously difficult to move from there. I hit it very solid during this drill but hard to turn into real. I think my backswing has gotten better, less movement right, but I still have the down and forward movement as I think it is still pretty ingrained and I also feel like I have less power as it feels like I have made a very short backswing (comparerd to old, but fine on video).

So my question is: How can I stop this forward down movement? I get cramped and hit weak shots to right. i just don't know how to trigger the downswing. Every time I try and do it with pivot, I move more forward and down.

I just don't know if I can get better with the method he is teaching but know he is correct.

The best instructor I ever had was a bunch of years ago and he always had me hitting it much, much better upon leaving. From slices to high draws.
Basically, his motion was shown by holding the club with just the thumb and forefinger, left fingers at butt end, right fingers at other end of grip and just swing it back. In that move you can see the club set up nicely and then just drop and release to a wedding ring up type position. The other method was a tee in butt end of club and getting it pointed at target line going back after about 2 feet and have it point at it 2 feet after hitting ball.
I am now (and always) torn between these two methods and going backwards.
Sorry for so long but as I said very frustrated!!!!
