Plugged the power leak?

I am the self proclaimed King of BPS, but I think I might have discovered something.
Can anyone explain why, during my downswing, if I shove my hips back towards my heels (think Villegas), the club zips downplane correctly and I can absolutely nuke a 7 iron about 190? It feels like I'm backing my hips out of the shot and my feet seem to finish ala Duffy Waldorf, but the motion feels very powerful. Forever, I had a tendancy to let my right hip go to the ball which would put the club below plane a lead to all sorts of "great" shots.

What am I on to here?

Thanks

Turning Towards Center

Are you shoving both hips or turning your left (lead) hip towards center? Counterfalll? 190 yard 7-iron is pretty long.

It feels like my hips go to third base. Turning my left (lead) hip gets my right hip too close to the ball. Yeah the 7 iron was cool, it happened a bunch of times at the range...don't want it on the course unless I expected it or could dial it up on demand.

Most underplaners get the hips or pelvis closer to the ball at impact.

Hi Kevin:
I agree, el hosel rocket shows up too. It's kind of like standing up coming into impact, and is such a die hard habit for me. Need some good posture references or else crappy contact.

At setup, if you angle your belt line to the ball, (see setup article of Brian's), it does a lot to prevent the hips moving close to the ball in the downswing, which is an issue with me as well.

I've had the similar problems and similar feel has helped me.
Why I think it works is that if your pelvis tends to get too close to the ball during downswing, then the a good FEEL may be getting hips to go to the third base. I actually think right now of first backing my hips to the target (behind my back) and then getting them out of the way to the third base.

In my mind feel has nothing necessarily to do with absolute positions you move into. Using certain feel can move move you a different position, so it has to be customized for the situation.

how do you get the hips to third base without turning the left hip? wouldn't that be the same thing? or do you try to get a feeling that neither hip gets closer to the ball during the downswing?

Pieman:
It's the right hip I'm concerned with. If it goes to the ball, I stand up, get closer to the ball...and nothing good comes of it. As was said before, it's kind of an individual thing. Feeling like neither hip gets closer to the ball would be another way of explaining it.
