On another thread, a slight discussion of physical strength and how it may play a role on distance was slightly discussed. I ran into this article while searching for Tiger's elbow position and thought this may be of interest to a few...

If you follow the links, you will see a chart on the increased distance over the last ten year span versus accuracy. 20 yards of added distance with 8% decrease in accuracy seems to be an acceptable tradeoff. GIR's remain the same.

With the shift toward bombers, it seems that anything we can do to max our power given our physical limitations, becomes vitally important.

The Bear shares his sentiments in the shift from accuracy to distance and relative to his days of playing.

Another mention was the role of mechanics and how it affects distance,,,not good! It takes away the natural talents of the individual to swing freely...hmmm...

Bottom line, get with technology, hit the gym and weights, and listen to Dolby:) (or not)...

Real Power and Real Golf

An amazing number of my students over the years--Tom Bartlett, Michael Finney, David Dorman, Brett Gahm, Craig Magruder--have been VERY long hitters, esp. relative to their size. In that group, the only one with any size is Tom, and trust me, he'd hit it longer if he dropped the 50 that I did.

Why?

Becuase I have always understood the 4-Barrel Swing.

Amazingly, the goofy idea that you "couldn't do it" even crept into my head.

Boy was I wrong...eh, I mean Boy WAS I RIGHT!

Now that I have learned some really good new information, as well as my own research I have uncovered and fact checked as of late, will make the next wave even LONGER.

But was this--the four-barrel concept---the KEY to all these long hitters?

Nope.

It was the Pivot I teach.

VASTLY superior to the "just move hands with your hands" version taught by some, or the too bent over Hardy and Mac models.

Science is proving that I was right. So I'd better do a Pivot Video fast, huh?

"So I'd better do a Pivot Video fast, huh?"

Get on it!!! Just kidding, I think we all appreciate how busy you are. I know I would be first in line though for a video dedicated to the pivot as an extension of the great perfect pivot articles.

So Brian....

I think you have said that your new swing is a "Pure Swing"...

Is it?

Or is it a 4B? (just without the full-roll w/ flat left wrist)

...

Cause you said Tiger is a 4B guy....and he bends er past Impact. (like you do now)

What if you take it back with your hands and THEN say, "left shoulder up" it in the downswing?

Brian, how do you teach someone to not throw the clubhead away, load and wallop with the pivot, and add a bit of right arm, all pretty much at the same time?

I used to use that swing thought birdie, in fact I use it for a number of years..
I first learned about it in a little book from the 1950's called "The Golf Secret" by a Scottish guy called H.A. Murray.

It was VERY accurate, but severely limited in terms of distance. It always seemed like I neded an inordinate amout of energy to lift the left shoulder up fast enough.

I feel a better thought is "right shoulder under" which, by default, makes the left shoulder go up automatically.
So my swing thought is (right shouldr) "under and up"...
Much better, a much more natural movement..

Oh man......see I'm the opposite......

I've had less success with right-sided-only thoughts.

So far "left shoulder up" and "hit with both hands" have been good thoughts for me.

The Manzella-Method 101

One of the REAL keys to my teaching Method is to get student to do the most important things correctly—by any means.

In my view there are 7 very important items. I call them:

Manzella's 5 Crucial Elements of Control

1. Clubface Control
2. Plane Line Control
3. Clubhead Force Control
4. Pivot Force Control
5. Axis Tilts Control

If the golfer thinking LEFT SHOULDER UP assist them in #5 and #4, that's what we are using.

Any chance of a 4bl video???

I THINK that I have a max participation stroke: I use my pivot to wallop the ball, and at the same time my right forearm is pushing fiercely to hit the ball.

At the same time I've been working on a stroke that falls into the category of pure swinger, and I seem to be able to hit that nice Snead pull draw a bit better with this pattern. The pattern that I mentioned earlier gives me a much stronger draw.

I swear that this year my tinkering will end.
