My habit has been to slide my hips up the wall instead of turning them. In trying to better learn the "Perfect Pivot". I have began in practice swings to preset the initial turn of my hips.

When I start the backswing with my hips already in the correct position it feels much easier to rotate around my spine and end up in a good perfect pivot position. My pivot has gotten much better, but there is still work to do. I want it to be automatic instead of something I have to consciously strive to do on each swing.

Is the pre-set of the hips ok to do in practice?

According to Mr. K . . . the right hip must be cleared on the Downstroke AND the Backstroke . . . so I would say . . . yes sir . . . you is OK.

Getting the right hip out of the way of the right elbow is good.

The right elbow NEVER wants to be in back of the right hip, in other words.

If pre-setting the right hip achieves this objective then flowers will bloom in your garden.

Geoff Ogilvy

Watching the PGA yesterday, from the DTL view of Geoff Ogilvy, it looks like he has a slight amount of pre-turned or pre set hips just prior to takeaway. Could be the camera angle, but I noticed it on numerous shots. Could it be the Peter Thompson infuence?

Tried pre-set rt hip yesterday after reading this post. Off tee, results were very good. On irons, I had some difficulty. Question: Is a pre-set right hip an acceptable component for a swinger, and does the preset right hip vary at all in depth with an iron shot from the fairway as opposed to a driver off the tee?

Still "pre-turn" 'em . . . but get your tailbone more forward too on the irons. Try to feel like you leave it (the tailbone there). With the woods you can move off the ball and still get back in time for impact since it's sitting on a peg. But with the irons if you sway around too much your low point will move all over the place. Get your tailbone left, pre-turn your hips and feel like you are staying left on the irons while you pivot.
