Pull hooks with significantly inside to out swing path, ideas?

First of all a quick introduction, my name is James and I'm from Australia and I came across this forum by simply typing in a few swing 'symptoms' into Google and voila, here I am!

A little background information, I used to be a fairly decent player, I never got to scratch but my handicap fluctuated between 1 and 2 during my teens and early 20's. When I was about 22 my career took me away from golf and I literally didn't pick up a club in about 8 years. Anyway the urge became too strong to resist and I headed to eBay and picked myself up a set of clubs and decided to start playing again.

I have only played half a dozen rounds since my return and the results have been frustrating to say the least, I get the occasional comments from those who know me 'oh your swing hasn't changed a bit!' but I cannot play to save myself! To say my ball striking is inconsistent is the understatement of the century...

The most significant thing I have uncovered so far is the vast majority of my shots result in a divot pointing way to the right of the target, I'm not talking just to the right of the target, I'm talking anything up to about 15 degrees right, even with short irons. Anyway I'm hitting pretty much every bad shot known to man but these are a few of the symptoms -

- Pronounced inside to out divot path.
- Much higher ball flight than normal, I'd call it a 'weak' flight.
- Normal shot seems to be a high pull hook.
- I'm catching a lot of iron shots fat.
- Just occasionally I'll hit a huge push to the right, often it will also be thin as well.

Now I'm completely lost, I've always been more of a feel player than a technical player but I noticed a number of posts on this forum that seems to suggest that all of the above symptoms could be caused by 'underplaning'. I have linked a Youtube video of my swing (apologies for the angle) and would greatly appreciate if someone would critique my swing and perhaps suggest where I should be concentrating on. It has been suggested to me that my pivot might be stopping, is this indicative of underplaning or perhaps a separate issue? I certainly don't have the extension that I used to.

Not wanting something for nothing, can someone point me in the direction of one of Brian's videos that you think might be beneficial in my case? 8 years away is certainly a long time but it's so frustrating knowing that I used to be able to play this game to an acceptable level but now I'm effectively useless! Thanks heaps for any suggestions.

Steve Khatib is a Manzella Academy Instructor and is in Melbourne, I think. Might be a long drive, but there's an instructor there that is up to date with the latest information.

climber79 ... from the video, it appears as if your hips and shoulders are rotating together in the downswing. If that is what is happening, you have lost flexibility in your torso to separate your hip and shoulder rotation sequencing .. i.e. your X-Factor.

Your long layoff, aging and perhaps sitting too much in front of a 'puter monitor has tightened up your body flexibility. Perhaps flexibility conditioning is in order ... ya think?!

Horrible camera angle but sure looks like your head is translating back along with the upper center of gravity while the hips slide ahead, sends path way inside out, shoulders likely to closed at the points it really matters. If you square it with that scenario its going to be a hook, if you do get the face open enough its likely a push-push draw.

Probably the opposite of what you think...

If your divots are pointing inside to out then you are not pulling the ball. The fact that the ball is ending up on the left side of the target is due to the execssive inside to out path (which is even more inside to out than it appears if you take into account the downward strike) and the fact that the clubface is pointed at or left of the target. This underplane motion will also cause you to hit the ball fat.

I would work on learning to swing more to the left and getting the clubface more open. Almost feel like you are going to hit a pull cut. Your divot should actually point to the left of the target.

Just my two cents

Yup, stop swinging so inside/out and open the face a little. They will go away.
