I play at night or in a friendly low key round and my drives are high, drawing 250-260ish. Irons are crisp and controlled. My putting is good, with a normal grip.
I get in a tournie like this past weekend and my drives go short and crooked, 220yds, irons drop a club in length (7 iron normal is 150, that goes to 140), get the yips and have to use the claw.
Can talk all you want about planes, wedges, pitch/punch, but this game is all mental. I am fed up!

I've only been playing a little over a year but...I know a lot of it is mental. Everyone that has been at the range with me lately (since finally starting to put somethings together from my lessons with the Bman) says WOW! I can tag the flags, hit crisp shots throughout the bag and.... Yet, I can't transfer over to the couse. I started out really well on Sat but...I got very little sleep before the round and that caught up with me...so, that was something to build on Otherwise....I just suck out on the course.

I am starting to look at the mental side of the game as well. I think I am taking too much internal pressure out there and creating a lot of tension. Tension is BAD!!!!

Someone on this site mentioned "clear keys". Might be worth looking into it.

my clearkey is "I am the light of the world," 3 bounces of the club over the ball and BOOM...

I think that it takes confidence to play good golf. We can trace straight plane lines all day long, fight over the tripod and talk about FLW all day long, but it means nothing if you can't take it to the course...

I believe, I believe!

I believe.

But if you can't catch the ball on the way down, while the club is making a good curve and the clubface is squaring up...

You can believe all you want, but the ball is in the water/trees/trap/rough.

Sounds as though you are steering when you get in a tournament and slow everything down to try to make the ball go straight. Jim McLean said you should imagine you are trying to hit the ball in the ocean, free yourself up, swing with a little abandon to hit the ball straighter. I've had rounds where all the sudden I was hitting my 3 wood about 210 yards because I was trying to be too careful and place it in the fairway. When I would aggressively take the right shoulder down-plane I would get back to the 240 yard 3 woods I usually hit.

Yes sir...

Hell look at Eldrick....best player in the world.....one of the best seasons of all time and he wants to change his swing. He thinks he can get better.

"If you keep doing what you've always done you'll keep getting what you've always got."

....speaking of Clear Keys this (above) is a quote from the man himself. (Carey Mumford....of KeyGolf)

I do actually really belive in them and his whole system....just try with putting. Conscious thought over the ball is NOT a good thing.....at all. It's just a way to occupy your mind with something non golf.

For example....I was hitting balls tonight and was working on new things...

Then I started thinking about something else....can't remember what.....continued hitting balls....

I realized suddenly that...

1. I'd reverted to my old swing automatically.....and was not doing the things I was working on...

2. I was hitting some very good shots without thinking about it.

I think Carey's way ahead of his time really. (like HK was and STILL IS)
