Ball leaves a divot in the ground - kind of a round or oval dent or gouge in the turf but no club head divot. Flight is usually lower but on target with slightly less distance. When I do take a club head divot it is either down the target line or slightly in to out. Normally hit a slight draw. More a swinger than a hitter. These types of divots can occur with 3wd through PW.

I know it is a bit thin but is this symptomatic of anything else?

Thanks for your help.

Excessive forward hip slide on the downswing will have you bring the clubhead into the ball too steeply with impact then being made above the equator. Thus the ball is hammered into the ground, causing the elongated indentation which leads to short and low ball flight.

Thanks to Brian, Burner and EdZ for your guidance. Interestingly I can hit driver off the deck straighter than I can off a tee - usually very straight low burner that appears to carry about 250. My hands feel firmer through the ball and my impact position seems better.

What Brian indicated meshes with what I was thinking I need to do - learn to get the feel for a cut - one that starts left and cuts right. I can hit push cuts only which I figure means I am too inside as EdZ indicated.

Again - appreciate the help. Thanks.

Also, drill with your back to a wall (stand a few inches to a foot away). Sounds like you are quite a bit below plane and the wall will help you get more 'up and down' and less 'around'.

EdZ

I am definitely under plane or so I have been told by a few pros. I am working my way up and am considerably more upright than I was with good results with irons (not driver yet). But, with a 4 iron with rear against wall, I can't miss the wall as of yet. Feels like I am swinging the club over the top of my head - very awkward from where I started from.

My gamer swing for a few years has been flat - looked about like Hogan at the top but with a closed face instead of open. Probably not a good top for a guy 6'1". Now I am going for arm between shoulder and head with a square or slightly open face (more akin to Ernie).

It is hard work taking the around out of my swing. I try to feel like there is absolutely no around in my swing, more up on plane than under and overrotating, and get good results from that. Will keep plugging.

Thanks again.

You folks were right.

Really worked at getting the ball to start left and then cut back. Very hard at first as it was going against all I feared - banana slice. But, to my surprise I was hitting it dead straight or with a bullet fade that flew on a clothesline. Absolutely astounding that when it "felt" like I was swinging 45 degrees left the ball barely faded if at all. I guess this confirms I was WAY under plane coming into the ball.

Thank you for taking the time to help an only occasional poster. Love the site.

Follow up.

You really helped my swing! I am hitting it far more on line with a slight fade on some shots or dead straight on others. Short irons tend to want to pull slightly but I think I have that fix in the mix. I think this is the change I needed to get below my 7 handicap threshold - a break through.

Hitting cut drivers off the deck did it. Thanks again for the help.
